Red is for HD coating.
Green for SMC
Gold for top lenses

Silver? I dunno no silver.
The DA 35 f/2.4 and DA 50 f/1.8 both have green rings and no SMC.

They definitely have SMC coatings, both the smc PENTAX-DA35mmF2.4AL and the smc PENTAX-DA50mmF1.8.

All green-ring lenses have SMC coatings (AFAIK), but not all SMC lenses have green rings.

I missed that DA-L/645 colour.
I just noticed that these two lenses have silver rings too:

- SMC Pentax D-FA SMC Macro 50mm F2.8
- SMC Pentax-D-FA 100mm F2.8 Macro

So the DA fisheye, DA-L lenses, 645 lenses and these two D-FA macros are silver ring. Hard to see what all these lenses have in common. A plastic lens body? Very confusing.

Hmm, my D FA 100 f/2.8 Macro WR, a recent copy, is all black but for the lettering.

What does it all mean?

If your lens has no colored ring I would get rid of it soon and cheap! I will send you my address!

I have red, green, black, and blue(samsung version 50-200) rings on my Pentax lenses. All I need is a gold ring and I can compete in the pentax olympics

Pentax should produce spare colour rings so we could change'em following the mood.

Why not. Pink rings, blue rings, white rings, black rings for mourning. Maybe even pulsating LED rings

It is already 72mm so anything faster would be even bigger and more money. Though if i had a vote i would have preferred constant f/4.

But the 18-135 is also 3.5-5.6 and has only 62mm filter so can someone explain why this lens needs a 72mm filter for the same aperture and less focal length?

I must be missing something.
Good question. Is anyone out there thinking to get the 16-85mm. I am thinking to get it, I presently use 16-50mm DA* lens as all purpose
