MX-1 The End...

The largest shop overhere has the MX-1 pointed out as no longer avalable. Since they stock everything they can get their hands on, my conclusion is that the MX-1 is out of production. Some confirmation on this or maybe on a new follower camera?

It's been out of production for close to a year now AFAIK.

Oh, really? Is the main Ricoh warehouse empty and we're just seeing dealer stock now?

I agree with Adam. It was my understanding that the MX-1 went out of production last year. That was when we began seeing blowout clearance sales and cheap offerings on Woot.com. A replacement? That would be nice but I have given up trying to guess what Ricoh has in mind for Pentax anymore.

They can't produce an MX-2 until every MX-1 has had a chance to wear to the brass - this was one of their marketting highlights and this takes time!

It's too bad...it was a fine, competent little shooter. The tiltable screen was very handy and the IQ was good considering it's small sensor size.
Unfortunately, the initial pricing was out of wack and I don't think it ever recovered from that.

It's funny because the MX-1 silver edition has only just been released in Japan as a limited edition model.

The MX-1 has had a strange history in Japan. It was shown at CP+ 2013, but wasn't released until months after other countries. When it was, it was very low key, without any advertising at all and only the black model was available. I think it was in May 2013. It didn't make much of an impact.

But during this year, the camera has consistently been in the top ten of the compact camera sales ranking of Kakaku.com, the main price comparison website for electronics. I think this happened because the customer satisfaction rating on the same website was extremely high. Right now it's #3 in the sales ranking.

(I guess this link will be updated if you come to this thread at a later date)

So I think the chances of a successor are quite good.

If there is a successor then I wouldn't expect a new and larger sensor. It will be the fixed lens version of the Q line.

Now that I think about it a bit more I think that a fixed lens camera would have the Ricoh name and any ILC would have the Pentax name.

IMO an ILC version of the GR would get Ricoh tag.

I always wondered if the MX-1 wasn't a pre-Ricoh design that they used to bridge the transition from Hoya. It wasn't a terrible financial success so they sold what they had and let it die. It's a shame because in a couple of generations it might have become the great camera it could have been; it already had a great lens and screen. The lack of any sort of viewfinder was mentioned a lot when being criticized.

Nevertheless, I'm happy with my black one. The MX-1 and Oly XA are a great backpack duo.

I wonder why we haven't seen a brass-bodied Q? Seems like the obvious thing to do. Or perhaps that idea was scratched after the MX-1's sales figures came in?

That would be a very heavy little Q. I think Ricoh wants to make it as a light as possible.

No idea if it was a succes or not, but when you sell all your inventory then it isn't a failure. I think a nice camera, a little big and the market would like a bigger sensor now.

Yes a bigger sensor in a slightly smaller body would be perfect
