I'm afraid on the topic of the outlook of newspapers and magazines - print or online versions - we will have to agree to disagree. I'm glad my younger stepson turned down a career at Fairfax a couple of years ago!

Nevertheless, in an era of declining revenues, advertising is currently cheaper than it's ever been.

The newspaper we're talking about is losing millions of Rupert Murdoch's cash.
They do not make money, that's for sure... But many read them anywhay and see the ads either on paper or online.

At least here in France, governement help them... But even when there are big economics issue, there always somebody that is willing to buy or help.

New paper give you lot of influence on many topics. By controling what the journalist are writing you can push your ideas and influence the readers. Avoid to give them information you don't like or express it in a way that is interresting for you. Insist on things that might not be important but you care. There are not alone, there the radio, tv and internet too, but as you explained newspaper make so little money that you can buy them for a bargain.

Just to say they may last longer than they would if they had to live only on their own money. In that last case, most would have already disappeared.

Good on Kennedy's for getting the products we know and love out to a wider audience.

About time Rupert had to pay to push his right wing agenda on the great unwashed.

The Australian is an excellent objective newspaper. I look forward to every Saturday edition, and wish them well.

Irrespective of the various views here, on advertising and Murdoch, this whole thread has resulted in one positive - Australian members have emerged in great numbers!

Arnold is correct, you know, when he says it's an objective newspaper. The objective, though, is to maintain and expand the dominance of the opinions of Chairman Rupert. Objectivity doesn't enter into it, but the objective as sure as hell does.

Then its back page also deserves an excellent objective... but instead, all we got was a superzoom.

PS. I notice I am still listed as a new member despite having joined in Mar 2013. Can anybody tell me what is the criterion for full mebership?
My understanding is that the title change is based off the number of comments made, rather than the time since registration.

Many forums do it this way as a way of easily telling how involved with the community a member is. (most forums will have a large number of inactive members, those who join for one reason or another, yet never make comments or involve themselves in discussions)

Yep. Which is why there're both numner of posts AND join date.
Sometimes it may help to put things into perspective and explain the content of the post (it it doesn't have to be any negativity in this).

C. R. Kennedy are the Australian (and New Zealand) importer and distributor for Pentax and Sigma...
Sadly CRK are only the distributor for Sigma as far as New Zealand is concerned.

The New Zealand distributor for Pentax is "Ian R. Little" (aka "IRL"). This is most unfortunate, because IRL has been killing the Pentax brand in New Zealand for years and years now.

While Ian R Little himself still ran the business, Pentax received excellent promotion but since his passing away, Pentax as a brand has literally died in NZ. There are a couple of specialist shops that still carry a minimal amount of Pentax but in some of them you will be advised to not buy a Pentax because of the bad distributor (they don't know when or if they can get spare batteries, when new products will be available, there are issues with warranty repairs, etc.).

The fact that Ricoh hasn't addressed this shocking situation yet, makes me wonder what, if anything, was behind their idea of revamping Pentax as a brand.

I'm not sure that Australia or New Zealand are vital to the shareholders, Class A. Just a dollars thing, obviously.

Little must have a contract of some kind. At renewal time, you'd hope that somebody else (maybe CRK) *want* the contract too. :-)

Sure, I understand that.

However,
  • New Zealand sales could be better than one would expect based on the population numbers because Pentax attributes (small, rugged) are a good fit to Kiwis (outdoors-oriented, adventurous).
  • abandoning the current distributor would probably be an improvement as this would probably allow people to legally buy from CRK Australia without implying a grey import. The Aussie CRK shop supported "New Zealand" as a shipping destination for a short period a while ago, but this option has disappeared again.
I've heard rumours about a change of distributor a while ago, but nothing ever materialised...
