WiFi is virtually ubiquitous, not a new feature or technology.
But it is new to Ricoh/Pentax. I suspect it took longer to realize they needed to add WiFi than to actually implement it.
I think the FLUCard WiFi was a stop gap, implemented quickly once whoever makes these decisions decided that adding WiFi was a good idea. Now we are looking at the internally developed solution. Whether the FluCard was good/bad idea I've no idea. At least it worked, and perhaps the sales numbers gave them a good idea of actual consumer interest.
Whether it should have taken them this long to realize WiFi was needed is another discussion.
