Nikon doesn't have to because all AI(-s) lenses from 1977 on work great on the more expensive bodies, WITH automatic light metering in A mode. Pentax... doesn't unless you call the old Spotmatic style of pre-shot lightmetering (with the diaphragm closed) via the green button "automatic". I hate it because of the inherent problems (over- or underexposure).
