Pentax appeals to outdoor photographers. Landscapes and nature photography. Great image quality, weather sealing, rugged build, good ergonomics. Lightweight lenses help you carry less and all are image stabilized. The only thing pentax is weak at is tracking autofocus of very fast subjects, which can be mitigated by technique and in reality fast tracking of subjects is only a very small percentage of what actually get shot.

One could argue that the real innovations to come will be at the software level, not the sensor level. That still favours outfits with big R&D departments but takes us a little beyond the traditional camera companies. In future years, there might not be enough buyers of pure, traditional cameras to go round; there barely are now.
Good points. Software is indeed a differentiating factor whether that be the menu interface or tethering. I'd say Pentax has a reasonable chance of succeeding in that area. They have a lot of expertise in software development from their other divisions if that can be leveraged. I personally think the Pentax menu system is the best I have tried and I have played with Canon, Nikon and Sony so they can build on that. However their struggle to develop a viable WiFi solution and having to resort to the third party FluCard thingie is not a strong indication in their favor. And the complete lack of a USB tethering app in anything except the 645 line is just unconscionable.

It's not hardware, it's not software, it's both. The biggest innovators in digital imaging right now are GoPro and Apple.

The k-S1 just came out recently, it can not be sequel in such a short unless the k-S1 has big flaws that a new release is imminent (as in the case recent Nikon models).

If it is a Sony, it will be k-55, if it is a Nikon it will be k-51, if it is a Canon, it will be k-60.
Let's wait few days and we will see...

Photography is in a very very different place now than it was before the introduction of the iPhone in 2007.

In less than 10 years they've gone from not having a camera to the most popular camera on the planet and have provided the platform on which a whole new era of social photography (Facebook, Instagram, etc…) was built.

So I'd put the iPhone right up there with the Brownie for cameras with the greatest impact on society.

There were camera's in phones long before the iPhone. Apple didn't invent that. Nor did they invent the touch screen. Nor were they the first to use them together. What Apple did was throw in their marketing weight the moment their was enough fast internet available for a mass market connected device.

They made a machine that was GAMECHANGING, that the world HAD to have; magnitudes better than ANYTHING out there. And they continue to do so.

And their camera's remain the best in class.

Cheers,

Never said they were the first or that they invented anything, but they've been particularly good at adopting technology right when it has matured enough to be sold to the masses.

Indeed but not always: do you remember the Newton PDA? the QuickTake digital camera?

So I take it you have not used any top tier Android devices lately? I think Apple finally caught up with 2012 with their bigger iPhone 6. They have awesome marketing though, I'll give you that.
