Android wouldn't have been possible without iOS. Android was a Black Berry clone until Eric Schmidt saw iOS at an Apple board meeting. Instagram came along in 2010 after everybody got rid of their old flip phones for smart phones. A little further digging on Apple Insider will turn up articles about how Samsung shipped a lot of phones but nobody bought them...

I'm no Aplle fanboy, just had a truly terrible experience with the hipsters that run an Apple Store, but what I can say is that we no longer have a single android phone or tablet because they just didn't work anywhere near as seamlessly as the iOS devices. Not simply as a group to share, but individually.

I think I've had the opposite. My last few phones have top tier android phones and worked great. I use the Galaxy s5 now and it is good.

They out ship Apple by three or four to one. Samsung reports shipments to retailers, but not sales to consumers. And only Samsung was making any money, and that dried up this year. Nobody stands in line for days for the latest Galaxy either...

Glad you're happy with yours. I was so frustrated and am very happy now so there's about 0 chance of me switching back barring some serious change or major problem.

Yes, one company is a distant second to many companies that aren't making any money...

Android phones are the new flip phone. I bought one for $30. It came with Spongebob Squarepants ear buds...

Read what I wrote again...I said they provided the platform. The whole mobile, social, app-oriented economy simply didn't exist before the iPhone. To deny that they fundamentally changed the game is silly. Just look at every major phone makers product lines before and after the iPhone and the scale of that change is pretty obvious.

None of this data changes the fact they are, according to recent numbers, the second most popular camera maker on the planet. Quibble all you want. Even succeed at pushing them down to 3 or 4 or 5 on your personal list. That's still an achievement that's the envy of the industry.

So? What's the point of this data point? Is it a proxy for quality? If it is, then they also make the second best camera in the world.

You may not like Apple for their pricing or their walled garden or their consumer focus, but to deny their impact and success is kind of silly. In less than ten years they've upended the phone and camera industries.

That's a weak argument. Actually, it's an ad hominem attack on anyone who wants to point out some of the things that Apple has achieved.

Apple has made plenty of mistakes. We discussed the QuickTake and Newton earlier, and there are plenty more. And I have plenty of issues with them.

• I publish ebooks through iTunes and their developer portals are seriously outdated.
• Findability on iTunes is terrible.
• Their walled garden approach keeps me from using many of their products.
• My iPad keeps crashing.
• Their file system for iPhotos was/is awful.
• Their iPhone battery life still sucks for my needs.
• Jonny Ive hasn't exactly hit it out of the park in his new role in charge of software UX
• Other are doing more interesting things in UX.
• I really don't like their touchpads.

So get off the Apple-hater vibe. It's just as annoying as the Apple-fanboy vibe.
