I'd like to see a Pentax FF mostly to elevate the brand into the same comparisons as the big two.
To my mind Pentax should be at that table, and by virtue of having the 645Z I personally see it as being above the likes of Olympus and Fuji, who are the other bit players.

I doubt that I would be able to afford a FF option from Pentax, at least any time soon, but I would like them to offer a product to fill a hole in their existing line up.
The jump from K-3 to 645Z is excessive really.

That jump means a totally new system.. new body, new lenses, new bag, new bank account, everything haha.. 645Z is a great machine, i really will love to have one, but to be honest i dont see myself shooting with just a 645, especially thinking about the size, weight of a MF camera.. on the other hand, i can totally see myself shooting with a FF, IMO many high end APS-C users could think about getting a FF at some time, but not many will think about going into a MF format.

Just reading your comments I have to say that FF doesn't have to be the progression from APS-C either. Higher end APS-C users may want to stay there because it's much better for birding etc. I'd like FF for situations such as low light or narrow depth of field portraits etc. to me it really is about the best tool for your job rather than one being overall better at everything.

Personally given the costs and beering in mind what gear I already have, I'd probably be happy with a lower mega pixel APS-C that was much better in low light, did video really well, had IBIS and was weather sealed. My k-30 does two of those already.

All this talk about photo gears mixed with beer makes me thirsty.

I want a new high end APS-C camera and some beer to go with it. And of course while taking pictures.

It all depends the type of shooting that everyone does... in my case i dont care at all about birds or plants or that kind of stuffs.. so the crop factor is not something that i wish to have... on the other hand people that shoot portraits, concents, weddings, fashion, and special events will be very happy with a FF sensor.. so that kind of highend APS-C users are the ones that could really look into FF at some point. Why many people doesnt consider Pentax as a Pro gear??. 1- there is no FF reference, and FF is a marketing reference. 2- not many people know about the MF 645Z and the ones that kind of know about MF they consider it another league waaaaaay far from their possibilities and needs.

Im of the thinking that having a FF will help the company to sell the other gear that they have because all this people that doesnt consider Pentax as a pro equipment will have to consider it again.. i remember a post at this forum a while ago when somebody said that he went to some store and they ask the sales man about Pentax gear and the seller said. "they dont have "pro" gear.." .. that is a shame, and that happens A LOT, because Canikons ( 85% or so of the market ) consider that Pro gear is a FF camera... and many of them doesnt even consider MF because they dont even have it so they dont encourange their users to look for MF.... its all about marketing there. As i said a Pentax FF will be like having a big brother in the house along with all the other APS-C and smaller cameras... 645Z is family too, but lives in another house.

Good point. I could see myself using a 645z for some things but never as my only system, it is too specialist. But I could see a FF as my only system.

What if Ricoh does like Nikon did with the DF and gives us a KD-LX retro FF right off the bat? Have you seen the lynch mobs on the Nikon forums over the DF ? Talk about DOOMED! LOL!

Funny thing is, I'd prolly like a KD-LX retro FF, heh heh, but I'd also most likely be in a minority on that one. I get the feeling that most people I see posting here are hoping for more of a K-3 style body with a FF sensor.

Whatever it is going to be, it's going to need a good size grip area with those big yet-to-be-named lenses.

Eric

But that's the thing, Retro cameras didn't need batteries, so they didn't have big chunky grips. Nowadays people rubbish anything not having a DSLR grip as being uncomfortable, but people survived for years with heavy rectangular metal boxes, often with killer sharp edges, with heavy solid manual focus lenses etc.

I'd like a retro camera actually if I'm honest. I miss the experience that came with the historical film cameras, the weight, the cold metal, the smell of the leather bag, the manual focussing and the massive bright optical viewfinders and cool focussing screens. I'd be up for that again, but I wouldn't want a plastic modern version of an older retro camera.

So yeah, do it right and it will be cool, as it's mostly about the interface I reckon. Put a DSLR grip on it and it's now some form of crappy retro hybrid and you might as well go full DSLR styles as a K-3FF.

Yes, I love it when people complain about the weight of a lens. I've owned some of those heavy if you drop them they will shatter concrete lenses from the 1960s and 1970s. Modern lenses heavy? Heh.
