There should be a reason for that, because canon's ultra macro lens which goes up to 5:1 macro has a focal length of 50 or 60mm
Canon's MPE has a focal length of 65mm.. but as you mention that one does 5:1!

I guess one could get close to that with a raynox and this lens... but then you are back into the 'cludgy' category of having to use multiple devices to get what Canon does in a single lens.

Um . . .
Venus is just a start-up Chinese company with only several people ( only one initially for the 60mm 2.8 prototype) . But they are indeed trying their best to create some interesting products (60mm F2.8 2:1, 15mm Shifted Wide Angle with 5:1 ratio (reversed)). I really hope they have their own success and then provide fresh air into the lens market.

Yet the Canon MPE doesn't go anything farther than 1:1 I guess! So you still need to have another lens for other stuff or normal macro things.

The 15mm shifted wide angle with 5:1 reverse magnfication ratio is indeed a very interesting item. Unfortunately so far not in pentax mount as I noticed.
Where did you get this information from? It is not on the venuslens.net website.

Interesting. It also apparently has 14 blades.

The lens was designed with a strong metal exterior, 9 elements in 7 groups for image sharpness and color rendition, 2 major lens groups to reduce barrel distortion, and a 14-blade close-to-circular aperture for creamy bokeh.

macro

Interesting and good news for Pentax macro lovers. That is all I need, 2 X mag. and the price is just great.

If the company could comes out with a dual twin flash light, specifically for this lens, that would have been near perfect

Mount it on a Q! I love mounting the DFA 100mm 2.8 on a Q and getting super magnification with lots of (for macro anyway) DOF.

The Pentax 100/4 is 1:2 (half life-size) not 2:1, as I recall. This is an interesting idea, but to be honest how often do you need to go beyond 1:1? If you are doing so, odds are you have a setup with a tripod, lighting, etc. where it is not really going to trouble you to use bellows/extension tubes. It is also such a challenge correct for aberrations well at such wildly different magnifications. The Bokina did infinity to 1:2, with added optical adaptor to do 1:2-1:1 in order to correct the aberrations at all ranges to a high degree. As to the optical design, it is a double-gauss based designed (like, e.g., the Bokina). I look forward to seeing the results (though with a manufacturer like this, QC is perhaps as big a question as anything). Here's the optical design and the MTF (for 10 and 30 lp/mm), though it does not gives the magnification it is for (still looks very impressive). The question is how does the performace hold up all over its range (as well as how consistant will the QC be).

The Dental version came with a set of close-up lenses. When used with the DS9 (yellow ring) it goes to 2x

Does anybody know how many aperture blades the SMC 100mm f/4 macros have?
