Will this be the lens that introduces a true replacement for SDM? DC might be effective and reliable, but it still isn't all that fast.

Glad you feel the need to make it even sillier.

DFA Star 70-200/2.8 would be a good hole filler in the lineup. When was the last time Pentax rolled out a lens designated "FA" (D FA even) wasnt it the 100?

Yep and that was a repackaged existing DFA100 plastic.

The thread indeed got really silly... I can do that! My prediction is that Pentax will give all other manufacturers a big middle finger by skipping the FF alltogether and marketing a small mirrorless 645 ILC priced just below the D810. They will introduce it together with a very affordable line of manual focus medium format lenses based on sucessfull legacy lenses.

Not for me, because I am expecting price to be around 2000$ and that is already a half of my FF budget.
But if everything goes fine, I am expecting to find FA*70-200mm for less than 1000$ later this year

Btw, there is a few 70-200mm lens already (Tamron, Sigma and now Pentax) but I would like to see 70-200mm f/4 full frame lens.
That class of lens is almost non-existent.
Most similar is DA*60-250 f/4 but it is too big, too heavy and it's aps-c lens.
Just for a reference: old Carl Zeiss Jena zoom 75-200mm f/3.8 PK AF is all metal & glass and still 50% lighter and 40% shorter (when retracted) then DA*60-250.

Especially the non-existing ones as there was never made a FA* 70-200. Check your facts

Sorry, used too much 70-200mm lenses and forgot FA*'s somewhat unusual focal range .
Not a big deal, there is only one Pentax AF model (until now) in that class and everybody knows it's focal range despite my little mistake.

I already explained that theory in one of the previous posts, but this is just fine example (if the figures are correct):
I expect new DFA* 70-200mm to cost around 2000$.
FA*80-200mm is already around 1400$ for a lens in a mint condition.
With 50% up FA* will costs equal or even higher than a new DFA*.
And who will buy that good old FA* ?
Nobody, even for 1400$.
So price will go down, after DFA* starts shiping.
Most owners and active users will sell FA* because they will be tempted with a new lens.
Buyers just have to be patient long enough for the price to drop below 1000$ which is a reasonable price for this out-of-guarantee non-stabilized screwdrive autofocus lens with very good optics and weather resistance.

p.s. Maybe it sounds bizzare in context of Pentax FF camera, but patience is sometimes a virtue

I don't know how many FA* zooms Pentax made but they're not like cars - they don't rust away to nothing in a rural farm field . Somebody owns them.

And my bet is many of them appear For Sale (along with plenty of other highly-desirable K-mount lenses) shortly after an actual FF camera body is released. When that happens (after the intial surge of buyers who've always wanted an FA*) the market will determine a clearing price for both the D-FA* and the old FA* lenses.

So I say the FA* lenses initially RISE in price, then settle down to a confortable exhange value.
