This video appears to explain it nicely how Nikon does it. Lets see if this link works... the volume is a little soft on my PC I had to crank it, then I turned on Captions too, heh heh.

Many DSLR cameras offer different cropping modes. For example, Nikon's FX (full-frame) cameras offer 1x, 1.2x, 5:4 and 1.5x crop modes. In this episode, Jason Odell discusses the pros and cons of using crop modes in your camera, and when you should consider them. He also offers some tips for how to set up the crop modes in your Nikon DSLR."
Interesting in the video, From what he says, it sounds like it is user selectable, and that you can map user defined buttons to switch in and out of crop modes. He also says the D4 grays out the boarder when in crop mode instead of just showing bracket lines...nice...and on the D810 if you turn off autofocus point elimination, it grays out the border too in crop mode...and evidently the increased frame rate in DX mode can be useful.
Ken Rockwells site says this for the D810:
"Crop modes.
It's easy to set a function button to allow direct selection of these from shot-to-shot:
Professional 5:4
30 x 24 mm.
6,144 × 4,912 pixels (L, 30MP), 4,608 × 3,680 (M), 3,072 × 2,456 (S).
1.2x Canon emulation
30.0 x 19.9 mm.
6,144 × 4,080 pixels (L, 25MP), 4,608 × 3,056 (M), 3,072 × 2,040 (S).
DX
23.4 x 15.6 mm.
4,800 × 3,200 pixels (L, 15.4MP), 3,600 × 2,400 (M), 2,400 × 1,600 (S)."
Knowing Pentax, they came up with an uber cool implementation and I can't wait to see how they handle it and what options they give us.
