I don't understand the need for automatic in-camera cropping. Just crop in post. I hope it's an option that can be turned off.
Unless the viewfinder would have a crop mode to make use of the entire view finder and not have the photographer look through a tunnel when a APS-C dedicated lens is mounted?

Unless there's a crop factor available other than the standard 1.53
Area of the sensor should be 1.5x1.5 = 2.25. 36mp/2.25=16mp. So the pixel density of the 36mp FF sensor is about same as that on 16mp apcs sensor.
I like 24-36mp FF sensor, prefer 24mp actually. CA of some lenses are bad on high pixel density sensor because the smaller pixel amplifies the issue. 24MP has enough resolution while still has great dynamic and low light performance.

Pfff... Another vote from me for EVF's. They would be able to acurately adapt to whatever crop a user selects, from 1.53 to 1.233333333 to 1 and everything in between.

Most probably the focussing screen just has some markings to indicate the APS-C frame. Or maybe using the crop factor will only be possible when using liveview?

It would be great if the camera provides a user-definable crop. I'd be tempted to set the DA35 Ltd to zero crop, because it seems it vignettes only at distance, not when used for close-ups. And I would probably set the DA70 to only a slight crop - maybe 1.2 to make it an approximate 85mm/f2.8
Since we known many DA lenses are practically full-frame, it would be even better if, for Pentax lenses, the FF camera knows what is the exact image circle of the lens and (by default) crops only as necessary on a lens by lens basis...

I think the concept of variable crop mode would be a marvelous idea. Square format for portraits, standard crop for landscapes etc. That would be innovative indeed.

Anyone know how Nikon implements their DX crop mode? Notably, does if apply to the JPEG files only or are the RAW files also truncated?

This video appears to explain it nicely how Nikon does it. Lets see if this link works... the volume is a little soft on my PC I had to crank it, then I turned on Captions too, heh heh.

Many DSLR cameras offer different cropping modes. For example, Nikon's FX (full-frame) cameras offer 1x, 1.2x, 5:4 and 1.5x crop modes. In this episode, Jason Odell discusses the pros and cons of using crop modes in your camera, and when you should consider them. He also offers some tips for how to set up the crop modes in your Nikon DSLR."

Interesting in the video, From what he says, it sounds like it is user selectable, and that you can map user defined buttons to switch in and out of crop modes. He also says the D4 grays out the boarder when in crop mode instead of just showing bracket lines...nice...and on the D810 if you turn off autofocus point elimination, it grays out the border too in crop mode...and evidently the increased frame rate in DX mode can be useful.

Ken Rockwells site says this for the D810:

"Crop modes.
It's easy to set a function button to allow direct selection of these from shot-to-shot:

Professional 5:4
30 x 24 mm.
6,144 × 4,912 pixels (L, 30MP), 4,608 × 3,680 (M), 3,072 × 2,456 (S).

1.2x Canon emulation
30.0 x 19.9 mm.
6,144 × 4,080 pixels (L, 25MP), 4,608 × 3,056 (M), 3,072 × 2,040 (S).

DX
23.4 x 15.6 mm.
4,800 × 3,200 pixels (L, 15.4MP), 3,600 × 2,400 (M), 2,400 × 1,600 (S)."

Knowing Pentax, they came up with an uber cool implementation and I can't wait to see how they handle it and what options they give us.

I imagine it can be turned off but "just crop in post" then requires the user to post-process every image. Not much point in even having a JPEG engine in that case.
Yes, and there are some people who do virtually no post processing and others who intensely post process every image, so it is hard to have a generality that will apply to everyone.

You're right which is why it would be good to be able to turn off auto-cropping (assuming they have auto-cropping). That way you don't have to annoy one group of users just to please another.

An in camera crop mode would be useful for people who want smaller file sizes and faster transfers, especially over WiFi. Cropping in post is of no help to them.

Maybe Pentax will just bring out two versions. A 24mp and a 36mp. K-1 and K-1r

Not at first IMO, they need to make a statement to Pros and that's what they will do.
Once Pros took notice, they'll attack us (most people here I mean), and that may be with a different camera, maybe a 24MP FF sensor indeed.

Well I guess I stand by my prediction of no full frame camera anouncment at CP+, it is nice that anounced that they intend to release one though ( I think we already knew that). Maybe we will see something other than this 3D picture of a possible full frame camera. I suppose they felt compelled to say and show something and they came up with this print out. Maybe they are really more interested in show casing a new 3d color printer. Does anyone believe that there is anything more to the full frame anouncement that they havent shared already?

1 day till we find out....
