FF GR is very much possible.

Ricoh has used the GR designation for primes between 21mm and 50mm equivalent in the past. They've used it for the GR compacts, M-mount lenses, GXR prime modules and even licensed it for smartphones. But they've never used it for optical zoom lenses. So asking whether there will be a GR zoom is an easy question for an interviewee to dismiss. It doesn't mean that they won't make a zoom with another name or that they won't make a compact camera with a longer focal length and call it GR. Hope that makes sense!

It does for me but probably not for everyone.

Ricoh = GR in the camera world. It's brand and can be whatever Ricoh wants it to. If they see a GR zoom market, then they might gusted that. The GXR was just a variant on the GR.

We shall not have a GR with a zoom lens, because that will not be the GR. It will be something else, as zoom is not the option for the GR lineup of cameras. GRZ maybe?

Also, the FF enabled GR is possible, in theory, but to conform to its current size (which means, no bigger than its relative from the film age), it cannot sport the 28mm lens anymore. In a film GR yes, it worked, but in digital GR, the LCD and all circuits eat up all the necessary space in the back needed for focusing of a faster lens.

So in either case the answer is no — this rumour makes absolutely no sense.

If made according to will speculations, the camera delivered will not be the GR as we know, but something else. Bigger, chunkier, or in other words, with less appeal.

But then, why would Ricoh bother keeping the current GR within same size as its film relatives, and stitch to 28mm focal length lens, if the GR name does not matter at all?

Well some might say it would get more appeal with a zoom (I don't).
It would be different, indeed. Not a GR, indeed. But Ricoh once did GX serie which was (except obvious size constraints) a GR of the time +zoom + VF.
They might do a modern GX but it will never be as compact as a GR. They might get 1" sensor though.

I think it's possible - 18/2.8 is tiny lens of GR with APS-C sensor. 18 mm lens! Not 28.
F 28/2.8 is just 37 mm, but it's old K-mount lens with huge flange focal distance.
As for FF sensor - RX1 is small. But lens is not small.

Maybe FF GR could be a bit bigger, it's not a problem.

Interesting but without the option of taking a K mount lens I wouldn't be interested and eventualy would probably go out and get a Sony A7....

I see potential for more than one Ricoh line from this point forward:
- Rebranded WR from Pentax (in place)
- Ricoh G800 specialist dust + WR series for industry (in place)
- Out of left field, can we expect either - resurrection of the Caplio/GX/ Pentax MX line with a 1" sensor, and a zoom (RX100/ G7x/ LX100 competitor), or a short zoom APS-C replacement
- Full frame 28mm "Classic Doobie in the boot" Ricoh GR.

I doubt it is neccessory to go for full frame GR.

since full frame did not give much advantage for a compact wide angle camera.

I think GR with K-3 24MP sensor and a 21mm "equivalent" lens is more likely to happen than full frame GR with 28mm lens.

so they can still get like 16MP in 28mm mode with 21mm "equivalent" lens

As long as we're tweaking the idea of what "GR" means, I'll submit my vote for a stabilized 28mm f/2.8 APSC. That 40mm-e FL is a sweet one.
