Indeed. It's often really hard to just start from a level playing field with lens AF performance and speed tests. Especially if comparing lenses across systems, since you will never be able to mount a Canon 70-200 f2.8 L on a K-3 to test its AF speed against the Pentax 70-200, for example.

You can do it by at least running different but comparable K-mount lenses on the same body with the same AF settings (eg the Sigma 70-200 OS vs the Pentax 70-200 on a K-3), then measuring time to AF confirm on a standard target, time to cycle fully from MFD to infinity etc etc. But they didn't attempt that at ePhotozine.

First this is the side by side comparison with the sigma when graphs on the same scales. The FF/APS-C difference is still there and obviously key at f16 and f22 (in favor of the pentax) and for any edge comparison (not in favor of the pentax).
Better than Sigma 70-200/2.8....It seems to me much better in terms of resolution at 70 and 135.
By the way, this Sigma is really very good performer.

A pre-release lense AND a camera that holds the lense back? Nah..Wait for better tests when the finished product and the new camera is out

Let's not forget Ricoh Imaging delayed the final product "to ensure the performance and quality that is scheduled".
????????????????RICOH IMAGING

And if they didn't redo the AF tests within 5 days before the published date, they didn't use the new K-3 firmware.

I recommend waiting for more reviews, with final hardware and updated software before nitpicking

It's just a review on a pre-release lens, I don't care what he says, Pentax knows how to make good lenses

Exactly. Thats what i was thinking when testing the lense. If its this good on a K-3 without the FW update, how good will it be on the new cameras, especially the FF? Damn..it will be a monster!

I am glad for the info from the review, but it does seem to be early to be testing the lens. I am surprised Ricoh would have sent them a copy to test without having finished firmware updates specific for this lens or, for that matter releasing a camera that can take full advantage of it.

Comparison are tough to do, because it is being tested on a crop sensor, while the question is how will it do on a full frame sensor. The expectation will be that border resolution will drop somewhat. I don't find that is particularly a problem as long as center resolution is high. Shooting at f2.8 and 200mm, sports or even a wedding, you probably won't be needing super-sharp borders.

Interesting how they managed to get a shot at 230mm with a 70-200mm lens (the squirrel).

They tell the field of view in a crop sensor. It would be something like 153mm on a FF.

I wonder if they messed up and put one of the 150-450 samples in there?

Don't think so. They also have samples that state 70mm. All the exifs are rather weird. And did anyone notice the (mostly purple) lines at the right hand edge of the sample images? They must have been meddled with some way.

Indeed. They mixed up the pictures taken with the two Pentax lenses they reviewed simultaneously.

If one simple review, and a throw-away anecdotal comment from the reviewer, should hardly justify calling this a 'deal killer'.

They didn't even do any AF tests or measurements (speed, precision etc) at all, for crying out loud.
I guess I should have said," if true it's a deal killer", just to be more precise....

Sheesh, you don't get away with nothing around here.

Personally I'll pay Canikon prices for Canikon speed and performance..... otherwise, why not just get a Canikon?
