Just took a trip to Yellowstone/Glacier/Eastern Oregon and really wish I'd had this lens! I'm renting it for my September Alaska trip and will probably end up buying it from Lens Rental if it's in good shape! Thanks for all the info and photos everyone!
You can rent lenses? Never thought of it. I'll bet no one does this in British Columbia. And you have the option to purchase? Sheesh.

Cheers,
Loyd

I think there’s only one outlet in the US that still has K-mount gear to rent, and that’s lensrentals.com. They ship nationwide with a scheduled delivery date and include a return shipping label. I’ve got the D FA 150–450 and DA* 11–18 rented for a trip to Badlands National Park in a couple of weeks. I think the way it works is that once they’ve shipped you your rental gear, they give you a price to keep it and will allow you to apply the rental price to the purchase price.

Wow. This reminds me of the Lease to Purchase system that allowed me to pick up a brand new Renault in Paris, drive it for several months as if it were my own, and then return it or buy it.

Thanks for the link.

LensRental is awesome. Gear is nice and I REALLY appreciate they have K-mount. Regarding the purchasing of lenses, I believe they only apply 1 week total rental toward the purchase of the lens, but I may be wrong. Just rented a 24-70 and the price to keep it seems really fair.

Yeah, they limit to one week, which seems reasonable. The price to keep the DA*11–18 that’s en route to me is very tempting, since they never come up used anywhere. However, the D FA 150–450 keeper price is only like US$80 less than the going retail price, so thankfully I’m only feeling tempted on one of the two. Will have to see the condition when they come, but I’ve only ever been pleased with the quality of lenses I have rented.

That 150-450 might stay a rental then! I agree, it seems very reasonable. I ended up purchasing the 24-70 for a great price and for 21 dollars more kept the hard case they shipped it in and they're sending me the original box and documentation. Very friendly staff as well.

A couple of Shots with my 150-450. I love this lens even if it's a bit heavy. I was lucky to hit a great sale on KEH a couple of years ago. Got it for $1100.00.

Works pretty good for Astro

But I love it for Birds and the zoo

Nice shots!
I can't justify buying one at this stage but the lens does appeal.

Settings for Bird Photography

My FA 150-450 arrived much sooner than expected. I have coupled it with my K3 body and have started photographing birds. There are many great photos of birds on this thread, so I am seeking advice on settings. Using "auto," I have captured some nice images of larger birds, but smaller birds are proving to be more of a challenge. I would like to set up U1 for songbirds and the like. What are the ideal settings for guaranteeing the clearest possible image?

I have attached a few examples of what the lens can do on "auto."

Cheers,
Loyd

Tell me about it. At that price I couldn't afford not to get it.

I wouldn't buy it at any price, because it is too heavy for me to lug it on birding walks with my wife.
My "77-420mm PLM" lens works just fine.

As much as I like my 55-300 PLM, there are times when the big guy can do a lot more. This pair was in in deep evening shadows, so handheld at 450mm on my K3iii at ISO 4000 at F5.6 and 1/200th
