Wow. That's AUD$3,300. I wasn't expecting that much! Interesting to see the AF button on the lens itself. I think it's got a focus limiter on the side, but it isn't explained. The more I use the DA*300, the more I wish for a focus limiter!
There is a focus limiter.
I touched/used it

Wouldn't think twice about it if the lens has enough pixie dust. It's all about IQ, performance and reliability. If the AF is really fast and accurate, and the IQ is striking, and I know I can depend on it, then it is simply a tax write off.

AF is very fast and very very accurate, the image quality at 400 is like DA*300 + HD 1.4x or better

Best regards

Excellent! Thanks for the confirmation!

That's not encouraging about the IQ. I already have the DA*300 and 1.4TC. If I was going to spend $3K I'd want it to be a worthwhile improvement!

You have a DA 300mm + 1.4x TC and want better IQ on the new 150-450mm? I'd point you to the Sigma 400mm f5.6 telemacro but the IQ would not be an improvement. Maybe a $2600 FA 400mm f5.6 would please you aesthetically, but that wouldn't be sharper than your combo. The EX 100-300mm + TC would cost you $1150 and satisfy the flexibility that comes with the zoom but I don't know if you'd consider it an upgrade in terms of IQ. Assuming your combo was purchased used or new it would have cost you $1500-1800, the $700 extra is for focal flexibility, faster AF, ergonomics and better workflow (programmable buttons and such).

Interesting. The FA 400 might be a good option except as far as I can see, it doesn't have a focus limiter either. The number of shots I've missed with the DA*300 due to the camera deciding to try focussing as close as possible is frustrating. For photos at airshows, a zoom is handy to get an aircraft full frame without being too close. The other key frustration with the DA*300 is the slowness of the AF; my much older and cheaper Promaster is much faster, but if course it doesn't have the IQ. I'll have to visit the Pentax forum in Tokyo again to actually try the AF on the lens. I'm a bit surprised though that the combination of DA*300 and 1.4TC would have better IQ than a lens without the TC. There's more to IQ than sharpness of course.

You are comparing a prime (albeit with a teleconverter) with a zoom, though. The zoom will give more flexibility, and if the IQ is as good, I'd say that's a win.

I agree, I'm really not satisfied with the 300 + TC combo...

I'm aware of that; it's the teleconverter factor I was expecting to have a significant impact. If the IQ is as good, that's nice, but if all I'm getting for AUD3300 is zoom flexibility and a focus limiter, the AF speed improvement would want to be impressive.

Could be that the lens just isn't meant for you.

I may change my mind when I get my hands on it in Tokyo.

That's good to know!

But then again, how is it really at the longest focal length? (i.e.: 450mm) ??
I am surprised you didn't try it at that range !
People will buy this lens expecting great IQ at 450mm, otherwise they (including myself) would think twice about it or even skip it altogether, right?

That's the whole point in considering buying this lens, for me anyway.
I too have the DA*300/4 plus HD 1.4X TC and I sure as heck will expect that much with the 150-450.

I am thinking the same way!

I suppose we will have to wait and see what "field tests" will tell.

Yep. I'm not likely to get my hands on one to try here in Australia, so I'll be relying on the experiences of others - and possibly I can try one at the Pentax Forum later this year.

Some say it will have excellent IQ throughout the range.
Some say it will not be as good at the long end because it's a zoom !
Some say .... blah, blah, blah ...
Nobody knows for sure !

I am truly hoping for excellent IQ but, and once more, let's wait and see !
I am too darn cheap to try it first !!

Lucky guy who got to try one out in NT and Queensland for the brochure! If you're prepared to spend that much on a lens, I don't think you can say you're cheap.
