This is great stuff from current owners, the 150-450 seems exceptional lens, if I had the money I'd chose it over the EX 500/f4.5, or even the DA 560 (although its a sharper lens) due to flexibility and portability and modern AF. I fear Ricoh are delaying the d-FA* 70-200/f2.8 because they can't seem to bring "star" image quality over the d-FA 150-450 (which IMO is as good/better than any * zoom pentax has produced to date) Hope they tweak the optical formula and give us an uncompromising, top-notch performer unsurpassed across the brands. Regardless like Kenneth often says, its a great time to be a Pentax shooter...

@Mike.P I saw your pics from the airshow at Flickr. They are great! Are they handheld or you have used a monopod? They look very clear and with high resolution, even though many are with a quite slow speed. Also do you shoot on shutter priority mode? I also have the K-5IIs and usually shoot @TAv and leave the ISO for the camera to decide. AF in continuous mode and using all the AF points but since today, with the Bigma, I very rarely went to shutter speeds lower than 1/400. I always shoot handheld also, and I see that tha DFA is quite heavier and my wrist will suffer soon after some continuous shooting session...

Thanks.

I absolutely hate both tripods and monopods (although I did finally give in and buy a decent tripod and gimbal for my FA* 250-600mm a few weeks ago) so I always shoot hand held. To be honest I didn't have a problem when using the Sigma 50-500mm OS but I definitely noticed the difference weight wise the next morning with the 150-450mm, my shoulder/arm was killing me.

I tend to shoot TAv mode as well but use continuous AF with centre point ... as for shutter speed, I have to get well below 1/400 to get decent propeller blur on the aircraft.

Thanks for your answer. Yes, I know what you mean but I rarely see any props around here! The only times I go below 1/400 is for panning. I wish one day I manage to visit UK airshows and shoot some veteran props that I love!

I'm sure that I will face the same problem as from the short periods I held the new lens with my K-5, I felt the stress and fatigue quite soon! With the 50-500 I also had little problem to shoot handheld for a whole afternoon with short breaks. I will come back in about 10 days, after I have a short airshow experience. I hope that the excitement and adrenaline will sooth the pain!

I had a Sigma 150-600mm contemporary arrive a couple of days ago to try on my 7D. I know it's half the price of the Pentax lens but IMO this is one of those times where I think you do actually get double the performance for your money. I recently tried the sport version as well but that was (A) much to heavy to be shooting at an airshow all day and (B) not much better than the 100-400mm I am thinking about replacing.

Infact I have to say that IMO the 50-500mm OS is a much better lens IQ wise.

Few more, think I have found the perfect airshow lens

Thank you for your information. I've never had the chance to shoot with any of the Tamron or Sigma 150-600s. In fact the 600mm long end is very tempting, but from what I've read only the Sigma S is really good at this focal length (unless seriously stopped down) in the entire frame, but as you said it is too heavy to consider buying it! Moreover the DFA 150-450 is usable with the HD 1.4X converter and thus it offers even more reach (630mm) at the cost of -2/3 of a stop light.

For the DFA I still have no experience how it performs with the K-5IIs at aviation photography, but I will soon find that out. I agree with you that the Bigma 50-500 OS is a really nice lens. If you use it around f9 you get very good results and it offers the advantage of a 10X zoom, so with one body and this lens you have great versatility. What I would prefer is that Sigma would upgrade the 50-500 with better glass and construction quality that would give an even better Bigma. I was expecting that the 150-600 would surely be better than the 50-500 and I'm surprised by your comment. The 50-150 makes HUGE difference when you are close to a landing strip or you shoot formations, planes at the static display etc.

How does the DFA compare to the 100-400? This is an interesting comparison especially with the new II version. Also with the 80-400 from Nikon. These lenses are direct competitors but I have never used any of them and the comparison is difficult as the cameras are different as well, so it would be better if you compare different systems not just the lenses.

Thanks for your comment, but I'm not sure I understood your last statement : when you say that the 50-500 is a much better lens, you mean compared to the Canon 100-400, the Sigma/Tamron 150-600 or the Pentax 150-450 ?

Hi Colodion, my congrats for your shots. I see from your gallery that you have (or you used) a DA*300. What can you say comparing the IQ of these 2 lenses (150-450 and 300)? Your shots with the 150-450 are made between f/8 and f/11: what is your opinion on the lens used wide open?
Thanks!
Michele

Personally I would take the Sigma 50-500mm OS over the Canon 100-400mm (MKI), Sigma 150-600mm C or S version any day. On the other hand the 150-450mm is turning out to be (for me at any rate) one of those rare lenses that you would have to prise out of my cold dead hands to get it off me ... the only others being the DA* 50-135mm and DA* 60-250mm.
