Is it just me, while being very happy, that PENTAX produced this new Tele Zoom lens after all, I’m somewhat disappointed ?
Why ? I was hoping to get this new toy closer to the spec as indicated in the former rumours, meaning 120 – 380 mm, but specifically lighter - and optically superior of course !! - than the Bigma (50-500), which I already have.
My “ideal” zoom would be similar to the CaNikon version of 80/100 to 400 mm, with only 1.5 kg and not 2.5 kg. The Bigma is already (too) heavy (at 1.8 kg) for being always with me, hence the new zoom would be even more a burden to carry and use ?!?
I would have replaced the Bigma under those circumstances, but as the new zoom is heavier, and also some 4 cm longer, I might just stick with the Bigma.
Regards
Urs

But it may trash the Sigma IQ and Pentax exercise here is to appeal to Pros, IMO, without conceding much if at all.
Normal people (dunno about you I'm certainly very far from being Pro) like me will get something more affordable, later.

It is an "almost full frame crop lens".

Considering the size, weight, and price of the 150-450 F4.5-5.6, I'm now toying with the idea of just adding a second 1.4 TC to my DA*200 F2.8 to give me a 400 F5.6. Image quality with one TC is excellent with this prime; wonder what adding a second would do, and how auto focus would be?

Sure would be a lighter weight and cheaper alternative.

Might be better to just buy a DA*300 and use one TC. Would be interesting to see the difference though.

Without zooming convenience, however.

On the 150-450? It's got All Weather sealing, the same as Star and digital 645 lenses. Or maybe I misunderstand what you're asking...

The spec list didn't say weather sealing, or did I miss it?

It is there. Not WR, but AW, which is even better than WR.

They put AW in the name which is also used in the 645 lenses for weather sealing.

Edit: From Pentax USA

QuoteQuote:
The HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW covers focal lengths from 150mm to 450mm — a focal-length range demanded by higher end PENTAX-camera users. Also incorporated are three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and a super-low dispersion glass element to effectively compensate chromatic aberration. The highly desirable weather-resistance body protects the inside of the body from both dust and moisture, making it an extremely dependable and durable DSLR accessory in demanding outdoor conditions.

It appears the 70-200 lens will get the * designation and the 150-450 will not.

Indeed. Variable aperture I guess.
