ok, no problem (and sorry if I upset you, I didn't mean it) !

So DagT had the time to put some RAWs on DropBox (he will put the link here soon I guess), thanks !
The cat is fine, the seagull less, but looking at he exifs (1/400 - ISO100 - f5.6 for the cat & 1/320 - ISO100 - f8 for the seagull) IMHO the results would be better with a shorter shutter speed and higher ISO.
Remember that I used the 1.4 TC on the seagul picture, so the focal length was 630mm, which og course limits the quality i little and make focussing more difficult.

I was testing the limits, and I agree that I usually should use higher ISO.

I suddenly had a chance to test the lens yesterday (thanks to Kenspro) and made a small web site with a couple of images: Pentax D-FA 15--450mm | Dag Thrane

Somehow the EXIF data disappeared but I´ll look into that and add some more pictures.
For those interested I have added some more pictures and technical details. Also, to get a better impression of the pictures I have added a little sharpening to the processing as this is what you usually would do anyway.

The drop box link to RAW versions of two of the pictures is here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kltb76zuwcf17p1/AACrW_nM26W-SvuFavO1UMCXa?dl=0

Thanks for the raw images. The gull shows substantial movement blur; at 1/320 movement may be the issue, or possibly vibration from the shutter especially with the TC. I'd start at 1/1600 with that combination, and you probably would get better images by removing the TC to get the stop of light back. Set up on a solid tripod as well.

Frankly, for me that would have been a throw away.

I'm saying this because I still don't have an impression of the lens. Above 300mm so much is technique dependent, especially at 630mm there are so many things that can go wrong that have nothing to do with the lens.

Yes, you may be right. It also takes some time to get used to, and I see that the newer pictures are improving over the first ones. I guess the photographer is the limitation, which is a good sign for the lens :-)

I would love to keep it for a few weeks, but I´ll have to give it back in a few days.

That detail in the cat shot at 450 mm f5.6 is pretty impressive. According to me atleast. Looks like the sharpness I get out of my DA 35 macro ltd. Or my DA*55 stopped down a bit.
I will buy this lens

Thanks for the extra shots... I ask again.are they are handheld with SR on? if so 1/320 is very slow I think, I would use 1/600 min
and DNG raw would be nice as can't open PEF in my old CS6

The old rule-of-thumb was to use 1/focal-length as the shutter speed, which would argue for a shutter-speed of roughly 1/640. However, my experience has shown that Pentax's SR system does buy some reduced shutter speed. Last month I was in San Diego visiting my daughter and took pictures using my Q-7 with its SR; I routinely was taking pictures with my 8.5mm 01 prime lens (35mm equiv of 39mm) at insane speeds like 1/15 (because of darkness inside old buildings), and I don't see any blur in these pictures. Of course, the Q-7 is "just" 12MP, which means I can't expect the kind of sharpness that you would expect from a camera with more MP, but even so I'm not convinced that it is unreasonable to expect SR to deliver reasonable pictures under the settings the OP used.

Thanks DagT for the shots, this lens is amazing. I'm going back and forth between Kenspos d-FA* 70-200 and your 150-450, every time I pick one dfa as my favorite the other makes me change my mind. I had faith on the lenses ability to deliver, the only concern I ever had was financing such purchases....not justifying them

Both lenses are mine But i can see its a hard choice If birds and animal outside are your primary shooting, the 150-450. People, action, sport etc..i would go for the 70-200 with and extender maybe.

Sorry, I´m using PEF out of old habit. Have you tried the Adobe DNG RAW converter? :-)
Some of them are hand held, like the cat. The first in the set now (the knitted chicken) is actually hend held at 1/125, which is amazing. I used a tripod with a ball head on most, but mainly as support as the ball was not completely tight.

From the EXIF note in LR, I notice that your K-3 firmware is listed at v.1.02 for the cat and seagull images. The most recent update is v.1.11. If I recall correctly, HD 1.4TC support was added to the FW via v.1.03. What effect might this have on the seagull photo, given that its reach was extended using the TC?

Anyway, is there a reason for your v.1.02 preference?

Just curious... M
Hmmm, I thought I had updated. The camera obviously does recognise the TC as it knows the focal length, but maybe I have lost some adjustments in later versions?

Thank you very much! Used Capture One to apply some adjustments. Nice detail / IQ. Seems I have to save some money.

Hi Ok, I wonder as its quite heavy to handhold, but it seems possible...maybe the SR is better on K3 than K5II?
any info on how fast/accurate the AF tracking is
Thanks again for your pics
