Back on the computer, I checked for more photos using K3 + 150-450. I don't have much, as I bought the K1 soon after the K3...

Thanks! I don't have the 560 to compare, but vcollerp on Flickr has photo albums of both lenses (he also has the F* 600 f/4): vcollerp?s albums | Flickr .
Like for the DA* 300 vs D-FA 150-450, I don't think we can differentiate the IQ between these lenses without pixel peeping at 100%. The difference is more in the size, AF, zoom or not, reach, weight, max aperture and price.

I noticed that you own an array of fixed lenses, including my favourite the 100 2.8 Macro. Are the other fixed lenses as crisp as the 100? Before considering the 150-450, I was going to purchase the 560. But I do so few distance shots that I decided a more flexible lens would be a better choice. However, most of the telephotos that I own lack the sharpness that I love in the 100 Macro. After viewing some of the shots by Timautin, Rob G, and others, I am feeling better about committing to the 150-400. Gaweidert's hand-held photos of moving planes sealed the deal. As Gaweidert said, he's 70; I'm 61 and not getting any younger. The 150-400 is a lens that I can manage for at least another 10 years or more (right Gaweidert ).

The first photo is uncropped, shot at 290mm, I was probably about 5 or 6 metres away close enough to fill the frame.

The second photo is uncropped, shot at 450mm, these flowers aren't very big so I was probably 4 or 5 metres away.

Both of these shots were handheld with the in body stabilisation activated.

This is helpful, Mike L. If you moved closer to the flowers and photographed them at 150mm, what improvements if any would you expect? I like being closer to my subjects.

I'm pretty sure I used the DFA 150-450 for this, not the HDDA 55-300, although it's only at 290mm.

Minimum focus is 2 meters. My experience mimics that.


Just remember to work out. I go in spurts on the boys old Weider home gym. Never lose any weight, but I notice the strength gain. I have used that gym more in the last two years than the 4 boys did during their teen years. Also got a weight bench and a set of weights in the basement. I do not play with those. A solid big tripod and a gimbal head are a good idea too. They work great.

I'm not precisely certain, but minimum focus at full zoom is about two metres.

PS I just checked the lens review and it states that minimum focus is indeed 200cm.

My birding sessions using a DFA 150-450 are1-3 mile walks where speed in setup is required . The monopod is not a perfect steady hold yet it has made these sessions easier on uneven ground especially .

When I have to use longish exposure times, I have found a monopod with a gimbal head to be a very effective shooting method with the 150-450.

Yes, I take most pics at my normal height but the monopod adjusts with a quick flip lock on each section .
