Matt thanks for the information . Does the metadata for each image contain the GPS info ? The K-3 Mk iii is well regarded by the reviews I read .
Yes, it contains all the info obtainable from the phone until the time you set on the phone runs out. (If I recall correctly, this will include elevation but not compass heading. I think you need to have a properly calibrated O-GPS1 attached to get compass heading.)

IMHO with the smartphone GPS you can't have same informations as with O-GPS1, so also no Astrotracer

You do need O-GPS1 for astrotracer because, as I wrote before, you need things like compass heading, which cannot be obtained (for the camera) from a mobile phone.

On the other hand, your phone always knows where it is, even (mostly) where you’re indoors. So location data is more available, more quickly (with different accuracy) with Image Sync on your smart phone than using built-in GPS or the O-GPS1. To me, even as an owner of the O-GPS1, Image Sync based location data is a big win.

Higher FPS rate and better af tracking
and 2 stops more to spend..... Shutter speed, depth of field, less noise.... you choose.

And... of course.... up to 5 plus years more usability.... depending on K3 manufac date.

I didn't think about that aspect not the relation phone-camera.
Indeed, no need to wait for a GPS fix.

Without compass heading means that camera direction is unknown so forget charting it on google earth or I can plant the O-GPS1 on top of my camera along with a DFA 150 mm-450 mm !? A fright wig , rubber nose and slap shoes can all so be added to complete the ensemble , for an additional cost . I can't wait to pan bifs with such fine handling gear .

Could these items be added in the future through firmware updates?

Cheers,

There would be no point in getting compass heading from a phone unless it is attached to the camera in a way that allows a sensible reading. For astrotracer and highly calibrated GPS including compass heading, we have O-GPS1. For simple lat/long/elev geotagging, we have phone connection.

I'd rather say 'elevation' but yeah...
Well, no. I guess that's why it is called elevation and not altitude.

I did some astro photo with K3 II and DFA 300/4, 20-40 sec exposure. The results were impressive. I shall definitely miss the integrated GPS... The O-GPS1 is ten years old, and GPS technology evolved quite a bit in the meantime.

Nice shot. Astro is one of the reasons I've had my K-3 II converted to full spectrum by KolariVision. They make a IR/UV blocking filter that adds extra sensitivity to the Hydrogen-Alpha and Sulfur-II wavelengths esp for Astro. I've been waiting for clear skies since receiving the camera and filter, but the few times I managed to get out of the city for the week-end there was too much cloud cover.
I would like to use my DFA150-450, FA*300/4.5 or Samyang 135/2 for that, but the filter is 49mm thread because that's what they still had in stock. Hence my first trials will be with the DFA100/2.8 macro. Kolari hinted that they were working on an upgrade to the filter to be released soon, so the other lenses will have to wait for that to become available in 77mm...

I share the wish for the inclusion of new GNSS technology into a O-GPS2. It could be smaller, faster TTFF, more precise, robust and energy efficient. The need of the K-3III for this device could be a good reasons for an update.
