Yes it is but it's a slightly different lens, including optically.

The kit lens is the 'smc PENTAX-DA L 18-50mm f/4-5.6 DC WR RE' whilst the lens sold separately is the 'HD PENTAX-DA 18-50mm f/4-5.6 DC WR RE', thus with HD coating instead of SMC.
Interesting info, thanks.

Not likely... Pentax usually reserves that option for top of the line cameras, like K-5, K-5II, K-3 etc

A new WG?! Those things come out every 4 months, it seems...

I hope hope hope that 18-50 is sold separately! I would preorder that instantly.
The original source says "Single item for sale will be adopted HD coating "HD PENTAX-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE"."
Which seems to indicate that the lens will be for sale separately.

HD with a green ring and plastic mount. Looks like the red HD lenses are going to be collectors items.

I'm pretty sure red HD is reserved for the Limited line. All 3 HD DA Limiteds and the 20-40 Ltd use the red ring. Green is for DA and gold for DA*.

Edit: Actually, DA*'s have both green and gold rings, now that I think about it.

Cord Camera was a 19 store chain based in Columbus that had Pentax sometimes, before they went under last year. I think many of these small chains (and the big ones that are gone too) could not react fast enough to the changes in the industry. Cord sunk a lot of capital in film processing only to see that market dwindle to nothing, then scrapbooking which was very competitive, then not being able to compete with point and shoots that you could get any place. Stock in their stores dwindled to where they just had the basic DSLRs, they could order other things, but how fast and at what price, why not just order it from B&H and have it tomorrow. The serious photographers were going to MPEX, B&H, and Adorama. I guess I could understand why a dealer could be too demanding, they may have to be to survive. A business relationship has to benefit both parties, and maybe it just wasn't possible. Hopefully they will gain more dealers than they lose, at least if that's what works in the changing retail world.

Dodd Camera's main store in Cleveland carries Pentax. Not sure about their other satellite locations. I believe they just opened up a location in Columbus, but not sure if they are stocking Pentax.

I don't think Ricoh even understands the red/green HD/SMC relationship. It's all over the place. I assumed green rings were an endangered species, but here we are with the HD RE 18-50mm and the two new FF zooms. WTF! Hope they get the messaging straight in the next year or so.

Looking through the review database it appears like Gold is for *, Green for DA, Red for HD, Silver for DA L and old D FA. Gold can be found with Green.

Are there any HD * lenses?
