So K-S1 was K-500's replacement.
Maybe in terms of a low-middle-high lineup, but the K-500 was a stripped-down K-50 with cutting cost as the primary goal, and they didn't sell it in Japan. The product team has said the design goal of the K-S1 was to be as small as possible, and it appears to have been aimed primarily at the Japanese market.

Wow. Pentax have been busy. A new flash is mentioned too.

Some of the features of this new camera will probably find their way into higher spec'd cameras like the K-3 successor and the FF I bet - like the flippy screen and in-built WiFi.

It's right on time to be the K-50 replacement (it's usually 18-21 months between models). The K-S1 was too soon, and someone stated flatly at Photokina that the K-S1 was a special model and NOT the K-50 replacement.

'S' for Special. They've used this in all their recent cameras which deviate from the norm.
So, if this is the K-50 replacement, why would they call it a "special"?

TBH, the name surprised me, but I guess someone is tired of the old scheme. It wouldn't be Pentax if they didn't randomize the naming scheme from time to time.

Does the shutter button light up? It looks like there might be a green LCD under that button.

I think it has something similar to the K-S1 - a ring around the shutter button that lights green for stills, red for video. It can be disabled, of course.

Ricoh is really turning the crank here! I wonder how close the specs will be to the current K-3?
