Super resolution by pixel shifting in future Pentax cameras

According to two tweets from photographer Kimio Tanaka:

https://twitter.com/thisistanaka/status/564321718190100481

https://twitter.com/thisistanaka/status/564321782417461248

- Ricoh Imaging will make a technical presentation at CP+ on the 12th on the use of the SR mechanism to obtain super resolution pictures through pixel shift (something close to, albeit slightly different from what exists in the recently announced Olympus OM-D E-M5 II).

- Such feature is likely to be included in new models that will be announced later this year.

- Tanaka makes an explicit reference to the full frame camera under development.

Btw, his first name is not Nozomi. It's Kimio.

Tanaka is allowed to ask everything about the recently announced full flame to Mr. Kitazawa, R&D chief of Pentax, at a talk show of CP+. Kitazawa would answer as much as possible.

It's the latter half of the second twitter comment. Other than that, your interpretation is perfect.

Interesting, Sounds a bit staged though. If I'm not mistaken the Japanese way is to say nothing with as many words as possible

However, we all knew that something like that is possible with our SR-equipped cameras. Pentax just never took the liberty to make a firmware for it.

From the description of Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II:

"8 images are captured with 16-megapixel image information while moving the sensor by 0.5 pixel steps between each shot. The data from the 8 shots are then combined to produce a single, super-high resolution image, equivalent to the one captured with a 40-megapixel image sensor. This feature is perfect for capturing fine arts and landscapes, and other scenes where high-resolution photos are required."

This I would like to see in furure APS-C Pentax cameras.

Ricoh is really reviving the Pentax brand.

Not only in future cameras, but also in slightly older ones, too. I don't think it's that farfetched to see it appear in the K-5 series or in the K30/50/500 models. That could be a good way to show the owners of those models that they're still thought of + it would be an incentive for people searching for second-hand cameras to choose Pentax.

I guess this is the firmware update that is supposed to be coming for the K3. Pretty sweet to add functionality after the fact.

Probably will be of limited use in a lot of situations, but it is amazing all the little things you can do with software when you have in body image stabilization. Just try to do this with your in lens image stabilization...

It can be done! But it's called "Supersoftness" instead.

Olympus has maxed out MFT sensor pixel count (16MP), Pentax has maxed out APS-C pixel count (24MP), Canon just maxed out FF pixel count (50MP) - give or take a couple MP. This pixel shift feature is only possible in cameras with sensor shake reduction, but in FF Pentax has not maxed pixel count yet.
First of all, Pentax should show a working FF camera. The main feature I am looking for is a small footprint and small lenses like DA limited series. Everything else is nice to have.

Maybe when the firmware is available an article should be posted on how to use it. Guys like me who are not into the technical stuff need some step by step instructions. Pardon us for our ignorance. LOL
