I don't know normal zoom lenses with quality bokeh. I think it is impossible. The HD 20-40 for some reason is decent in this matter but not exceptional from the images i saw. Bokeh should not be an consideration for theses focal lengths in zoom lenses.

Why not ?
Btw DA20-40mm seems to have a decent one imho.

I've recently tried the K-S2 in a local store, and it had the 18-50 kit with it. Getting used to the focus ring behind the zoom ring is one thing to consider, the thinness of th zoom ring is by far more annoying. For my fat fingers it's hard to grip. It's like putting a zoom ring on the DA 21.

People often comment negatively on men with tiny hands and fingers, but this just proves that we re the ones evolved for the future!

Looks like a great Pentax-friendly store! All those lenses and bodies on display.

The new kit lens' collapse function is similar to the Q's 06 lens, albeit the new 18-50 f4-5.6 WR RE DC has a lock button that you need to press for the lens to be used (you can't take pics when it's collapsed)

Ah yes, they also have on display the premium GR version, all DA* lenses, as well as all FA Limiteds.

firmware for older bodies?

I'm wondering if the older bodies (K-5IIs, K-5II, K-01, K-30, K-50 ...) will get a firmware update to be able to register correctly the new HD Pentax-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE? (and to make use of the different in-body lens correction functions...)

Just for curiosity, anybody who used the lens on one of the above bodies - care to check the exif? What it says about the lens? Also is it possible to turn on the corrections (in the menu)?

Thank you!

Most if not all body corrections data are embedded into the lens ROM, so there should be no need for firmware support.

Thanks thibs that's good news and I didn't know about the data stored in the lens ROM (logical!).
I was thinking of purchasing the lens - later - to fit on my "brick" (K-01),,,

Thanks to both of you, thibs and Zygonyx - your yellow brick looks good with the new 18-50, and I like the photos posted by you as samples!

Is there a typo in the Pentax literature? The lens engraving shows f/4-5.6, but they've written f/4.5-5.6, in both the product description and the specs.

PENTAX - HD PENTAX-DA 18-50mm F4.5-5.6 DC WR RE
