Red ring is history.
So the Takumar-style zoom ring is not the only retro feature of the DA 20-40?

According to a Japanese review of HD150-450, Pentax is reverting to Green ring to signify "growth and development, nature and fresh". From now on Green for standard, Gold for * lines.

That's the ever-polite Japanese way of saying: "This is ridiculous! Such impossible people, what's wrong with them? Complaining about red rings, and it even was such a nice share of red! Whatever, there's no point arguing with them, let's go back to that ugly green... we'll leave it up to marketing to make up an explanation"

Gold in addition to Green is DA* D FA*. Hang on to the red lenses. They will become rare.

@D1N0, @Docrwm, @Mistral75 Oh well, should have looked harder
It would be a real bummer if none have metal mounts... I'm sure it the plastic ones aren't that much weaker, but it sure feels better to have a metal one.

If we rely on the green ring a bit, the image shows the SMC DAL, which would have a plastic mount. The possibly red-ringed HD DA might have a metal one?
i agree, the red ring is a thing of the past. The company has had a rethink and decided to return to tradition.

A metal mount on an otherwise plastic lens body won't make it any stronger. It'll just break somewhere else.

I like the look and the idea of this very much. What a great looking kit lens (even if the DA L).

If its optically better (even slightly) than the current one it should be a winner.

Oh and I'm personally not worried about a plastic mount at all. I still have early DA L 18-55 and DA L 55-300 and despite significant abuse (the 55-300 dropped on concrete floor with camera in the first year), I have had no problems.

How old was this tradition?

I got the 20-40, so I'm into the red ring....

Too much like Canon for my tastes but glad you like the red. I'm happy they are going back to Green myself.

No idea Ron, but definitely longer than the red tradition. Your red trimmed Limited will be a sought after piece. I would think that we will see the red line for some time. I'm sure when they produced the latest batch of DA Limiteds they produced several years supply.

They should make lenses with interchangeable rings and sell rings of every color and stripe. They'd make money from people like me, who want rings of marvelously sparkly pink.

Someone has to ask, so I will: is this lens FF compatible?

I suspect not, given the designation and the design. But it would be impressive if it was a FF lens.

I meant the subjective/psychological feeling of sturdiness I know plastic mounts work just fine.
