The new hood won't be of much use on most other lenses since it is 58mm

B&H sent out their newsletter with Pentax featured (after Nikon) and the 18-50 was listed with its MSRP:
18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens: $299.95

I agree! While I'd stick with tradition I think when its reasonable they should give the customer what they want. Just look at what people do to their cars...

I guess. This is the sort of lens that will be discounted considerably in kits and the price will drop pretty quickly. I expect street price will end up being about 150, which probably isn't too bad considering. If I get a copy (I would enjoy using one on my K-01), I would get it used.

I'll wait for the discount or for someone to sell their kit lens. Then I'll sell my remaining lenses besides the DA20-40 to fund the 70-200.

With such a small lens, I'd wait until I saw the performance including distortion and corners...

As long as its as good or better than the 18-55 WR I will probably buy it simply to have one WR lens, not to replace any that I currently own. I hope that it is better than the 18-55 of course.

If I can pick up a 18-55 WR really cheap prior to the avaialbity of the 18-50 or our trip to Scotland than I may be fussier on the quailty that the new lens offers prior to purchase.

I'm looking forward to this lens being released. Such a small zoom will be really useful, and the motor and WR are icing on the cake. All I ask is that it's sharp at 50mm at f/5.6, unlike the current kit lens.

I hit "preorder" instantly, myself. The size was primary. If it were non-WR and screwdrive, I would have to think a little harder or wait for a unbundled kit. Truth be told, I was hoping the Limited Zoom would be this size--but since f/2.8-4 is slow for lots of people, these specs certainly would not have flown for a premium lens! TBH, $300 is kind of the breakpoint for me with this lens (performance to be determined, of course). Any more expensive, and I would be having second thoughts. Any less expensive, and Ricoh would just be giving up $$$ to me!

It is also a bayonet mount, which may or may not fit other Pentax bayonets anyway.

With the current 18-55WR being ~$200, I think the HD18-50 will be lucky to drop to $250 in the near future. The smc kit version...who knows.

Well, I'll see what I can do to help you with that when I get my copy!

OK. I think I was confused, not realizing there were going to be two different versions of this lens. You are probably right about the HD version. For my K-01, I don't really care about sealing though and a D-AL version would be fine.

DA L is also sealed, the difference is in coating (SMC vs HD) and quickshift and maybe something else.

So the kit lens will be no quick shift?!? Hmm, SMC instead of HD it is not a big disadvantage, but without quickshift seems a significant disadvantage.

Expensive last kit lenses (18-135 is a kit lens too).

Just checked and the K-S2 kits at B&H show the SMC on the camera photo, but the description says:
"Bundled with the camera is the compact HD PENTAX DA 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens"

Yesterday I pre-orderd the Black/Orange 2 lens kit, the other lens is the 50-200 ED WR, for $799, and didn't notice the lens photo, only went by the description.
If it's not the HD 18-50, and WR 50-200 I will not be happy

It will not be the HD.
