Hello! I am new to this forum , but possess a few years Petax cameras and lenses ... I have a question: Are there any more precise information about when the lens D - FA * 24-70 2.8 hits the market ? I am currently looking for a standard zoom lens with a maximum aperture of 2.8 . So my question to the D - FA * .

24-70 is not really a standard zoom for the current Pentax aps-c camera's. Not wide enough. The DA* 16-50 2.8 is the standard zoom with constant 2.8 for aps-c.

To answer your question, no, there haven't been any updates. All the full frame gear is expected to be released this fall.

Tokina just released their new 24-70 f2.8, which will start shipping for Canon and Nikon in August.

It's possible that the Pentax 24-70 may bear an un-canny resemblance to the Tokina, at least internally (in terms of the optical design, focus clutch, lack of image stabilisation etc). Tokina and Pentax have worked very closely before.

If Tokina are saying the lens will be ready by August for Canikon, perhaps it's a sign that a 24-70 for Pentax will also be ready by then.

There's already a 12-24, so 12-28? If they hadn't just released a 16-85, when they already have a 16-50, 18-135, and 17-70, I'd say "no way".

Well, I'd guess it might replace the 12-24. Plus maybe HD DC and WR? I wonder if they can keep the constant F/4 without it becoming much larger...

a 14-24 DFA would be the second "Trinity lens" is my guess, if they go the Nikon route and go 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm. So one's done, the WA is on the horizon, as is the 24-70, although, logic says, it will come as soon as possible. And it is on the roadmap, along with what looks like a 24-105. Very cool.

Essentially a complete line up of DFA pro quality glass. Now if I just had the 10k to afford them all.
+1
Looks like the Nikon Holy Trinity to me. Which is an 8k-10k investment, body included.
Unlike Nikon, all stabilized

Nevertheless, the 14-24/2.8 is technically very challenging to replicate, so therefore, I do have my doubts.

Because Sony hasn't F2.8 zooms yet, the only stabilized trinity then.

However, the kit zoom looks more like a 28-105/3.5-4.5.
There already is a Sigma 24-105/4 Art, no need for Pentax to duplicate that ...

It is on the road map and Tokina has a 12-28. As for the range is the same quality can be kept a zoom that go from a good UWA focal length to almost normal is quite interresting. It might be only 4 more mm, but it is sure a more interresting range than 12-24 if can be done. And tokina has shown it can. And 12mm is sufficiant different than 16mm to justify it. In particular if you are in the UWA market what you care is the 8-16mm range no the 16mm+ range except as a conveniance and that exactly what the 12-28 is promizing: real UWA + avoiding need to switch lenses all the times.

Initially I think they wanted the tokina when they had aggreement. I think they waited for the stocks of 12-24 to be quite reduced before releasing the 12-28 as they would compete with each other. Either the 12-28 had to be lower quality or the 12-24 significantly cheaper.

In the end, they seems to not work that much with Tokina anymore so maybe now they want their own design (even if it seems they had more shared designs)... And like you say there the 16-85... To me that's not a proof they don't need a new lense but maybe they aknowledged the great demand for UWA. Sigma and Tamron have offering that go down to 10 or even 8mm... I agree Pentax (and Tokina) have a unique offering with the 10-17, and a very interresting one, but the trend is heavy on rectilinear UWA.

So Pentax might want to carrefully decide what is better to do... 12-28 ? 10-24? even bigger 10-28 (that would follow the 16-85 trend for me)? And they still need to ensure the 12-24 still available will sell until there no more available.

The existing 12-24 is a good lens with poor chromatic aberration properties. It needs updating. If the new 12-28 brings with it superior IQ along with one or both of DC and WR, it will be a very considerable winner. It's the lens on the roadmap I've been looking forward to most.

I'd like the 12-28 to have a smaller hood. That's about the only complaint I have on the 12-24. It is ginormous!
