The 24-70mm would even be the rebadge of Tokina's, which isn't yet out there. You can think of the 16-50mm.

Might be.. Tokina is partners with Ricoh/Pentax for lenses.. that is why you can't get a (new) Tokina lens in K-mount.

QuoteQuote:
Tokina has[when?] become a partner of Pentax, a division of Ricoh, and have agreed to jointly develop some lenses. These will[when?] be available under the Pentax brand in Pentax K mount and under the Tokina brand for all other lens mounts. However, the research center, design and engineering teams of these two companies are[when?] completely independent.

Or it might not be. Besides the old (and expired?) Pentax-Tokina deal, Tokina might not find it economically feasible to make K-mount versions of their lenses (like Tamron). In any case, I don't expect any rebadges (for high-end lenses); at most, some shared optical designs; let's remember though how last time most of those were Pentax designs.
The 70-200 was also "rumoured" (i.e. people made it up) to be a Tokina, Tamron, perhaps Sigma and who knows else, and f/4.

There was new info that Tokina and Ricoh resume to cooperation in development of FF lenses.

That's why I said they could share (again) some optical designs. That info was too vague and originated from Tokina.

AFAIK only the 12-24 f/4, and perhaps the 100mm macro (not sure about this one) were Tokina designs; the others were Pentax.
That should put the idea of Pentax rebranding Tamron/Tokina lenses into perspective

Right. Tokina's 24-70mm was to be launched last summer, but it has been postponed for some reason I don't know. I'm not 100% sure that Pentax's FF lenses aren't rebadges. Given a relatively small capability of Pentax's R&D, we can't expect too much.

And you think Tokina has larger capabilities? That's doubtful, and very much so.

I don't think Tokina has a larger capacity, which would leave Pentax and Tokina a room for cooperation.

We should clarify a few things: rebadge means asking another manufacturer to make a lens for you, under your brand (which then you'd be selling). Examples of Pentax lenses which were rebadges are the 18-250 and 18-270 (both rebadged Tamrons). Examples of Pentax lenses which were not rebadges: 16-50, 50-135 and pretty much all the other subjected to their collaboration with Tokina.
There's no chance for Pentax to rebadge their high-end lenses.

Collaborating and sharing optical designs - which is the cooperation you're talking about, from what I see) is not the same as rebadging. Both Pentax and Tokina shared optical lens designs - mostly Pentax' - but built the lenses separately, with different barrels, electronics etc.
It is not impossible for this to happen again, but then there's no sign of it actually happening. All we have is some Tokina employee claiming they were talking with Ricoh.
And we know the 70-200 is a Pentax/Ricoh design (they have a patent on it). And that Pentax is (or at least was) more capable than Tokina to develop lots of new optical designs

As far as I know, Tokina owned the patent for the 12-24 and licensed the designs for Pentax 10-17, 35 macro, 16-50, 50-135, and 100 macro. I don't know how much cooperation was going on at that point. From Pentax's standpoint, it was just that they were on the edge of folding and needed money from wherever they could get it.

In the long run, it makes sense for them to try to have lenses that fit well with the Pentax ethos and that won't mean licensing other companies lenses, except to fill in gaps short term while they are working on their own designs.

I disagree with Pentax Corporation being at the edge of folding; their financial reports were in black.
But launching the amazing K10D and a full lens line-up was a considerable effort - in 2008, they announced no less than 8 lenses - including for DA* and a Limited.
