On-sensor phase detection elements cover 45% of the sensor, which may sound small but actually translates to around 67% coverage in each direction. While this is some way behind level of coverage offered on Samsung's NX1 (or even Sony's APS-C cameras), it's still a considerably larger area than that covered by any full frame DSLR's focus sensor.
It's really a feature for video on a dslr (or live view). less usefull for stills people using a OVF.

That being said... if they worked Canon's resolution adjustment feature into the camera...now that would be interesting! I could shoot at full resolution (call it 42?) for landscape work or billboard work, drop it to 36 for editorial/lifestyle, then drop it to 24 for wedding, finally drop it to 16 for that extra low light advantage when shooting bands or sports. Oh man I'd be happy happy!
That would be the best outcome indeed !

That 42Mp is the Pentax FF sensor.
Seems so logical if you ever read Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.
42 is the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything.

Not exactly this one since the Alpha 7R II's sensor includes 399 phase-detection AF points.
