I have the installation CD followed when purchased my K3, but no CD-player to my Mac :-(

Is these downloads a full version?

I don't think so. It is just an updater. Previous installation of the software is required.

This site suggests that you should download the updater to an SD card and install it from there. What difference that is supposed to make escapes me, but they seem to think it works, and I haven't tried it myself, as I've hung onto Macs with optical drives (USB external optical drives aren't all that expensive, really).

I know. You can get external USB DVD reader/burners for about $30.
But I guess using the SD card as a PC floppy disk uses hardware you already have.

If the software isn't installed yet, I think (no longer a Mac now) it asks for the CD (but it could be any IMG you did from the CD).
Otherwise, the soft is installed already and doesn't ask a thing.

Each update contains the complete programme with all the necessary files. However, the installation programme includes some kind of protection: it checks whether (i) a former version of Pentax Digital Utility of the same generation is already installed (registry check) or (ii) the original CD is loaded.

The following used to work with Pentax Digital Utility 4.x.

You could fool the 'update' installer by naming the volume from which you executed it with the same name as that of the original CD, i.e. S-SW90.

Indeed, as long as the installer found a storage device named S-SW90 attached to the computer, it was happy and let the installation proceed.

I do not know whether this work-around will work with Pentax Digital Utility 5.x., in particular whether the original installation CD is still named S-SW90. May be somebody with said CD could check its name and report back here.

From the other forum:

My attempt to update DCU 5.21 to 5.31 failed because the Updater couldn't find the older version on my Mac HD. To resolve this, I used the old trick of mounting an SD card, renaming it to S-SW140 (the name on the original install disk which came with my K-3), and attempting the update again. Worked like a charm!

Or forget to turn off image stabilization on a tripod, completely mucking up a 90-minute star trails exposure.

Okay, so, silly question. What does the DCU do?

It's for processing RAW files. But you can also do other things, like converting PEF to DNG.
You can also make some limited adjustments to JPEG files.
