but do the other mounts have something at 100mm which is macro like the DFA 100 WR? Samyang might have based it on availability of such a lenses across all mounts

Exactly. I think the main opportunities for this lens are Samsung NX where there's only a 60mm 1:1, Fuji X where there's only a 60mm 1:2 - yikes! they've roadmapped a 120mm 1:1, but it won't come until 2016 - and even MFT where there's also currently "just" a 60mm 1:1, though there with the additional crop using a 60mm is not as bad for critters, IMHO. The thing is, I'm not sure Samyang lenses in these mounts even give you auto-diaphragm - ie wide-open focusing with auto-closure of the iris when the shutter is activated - which is, IMHO, exceedingly important for macro...

Ah, right, those other mounts might make sense. And a cine version (stepless aperture, Tstops, follow focus ring) as well. Okay, good points. I doubt I will be replacing my DFA, though

Here is a link to the information page about the lens:

Samyang Optics, Lenses for Camera ? Cine ? Photo - VDSLR, Prime Lenses & Third party Lenses

The MTF graph looks OK for APS-C, but seems to fall off at the edge of FF.

Yes.. the niche was in longer macro focal lengths.. they should have went with 135, 150 or 180mm instead. The Tamron and Sigma models are fantastically sharp, have autofocus, and are cheap comparatively (at least in used realm), the Pentax has weather sealing. Not a big market for this lens.

A swedish site have tried the cine version of the lens. Buildquality is great, focus mecanism is great for macro.
The image is a little tinted to the yellow compared to canon 100mm macro
Sharpness is good but the canon is a bit sharper, if its because the samyang is yellowtinted making the contrast worse is not something they dig deeper in

Vi har provat Samyangs nya makrotele - Fotosidan

Weird move.
Why not going for a 150 or 200 mm macro lens instead.
100mm is just useless whatever the mount we speak about

Because it can easily be done in video version too and accross quite a number of mounts.

Also, more you go the tele way, more AF absence will hit (IMO).

Hmmm...I guess that explains why the 70mm to 100mm focal lengths have traditionally been the most popular for the last 40+ years. There are times when more working distance is not a good thing.

70mm and 100mm are fine distance for some purpose and provide the extra advantage of allowing some hand hold shoots with great resolution and not necessarily a full light setup. I really understand the need for longer focal length for animal photography or so (I am desperate that Sigma do not release a Pentax mount version of the 150mm Macro) but having a good 70mm macro is still a pleasure and it allows very creative shoots.
Anyway I partly agree with the fact that a 150mm macro would have been a better marketing strategy. I guess they wait for AF before to release longer focal lengths (they do not propose any 200mm f/2.8 and they only provide mirror 300mm...)

They are making the same FL lenses for each mount. They will never please everybody in each eco-system.

I'm happy they are realeasing stuff for K mount.

I completely agree. There are way too many legacy 50/100 macro lens already. They tend to be optically superb and have better built quality (Samyangs tend to be plastic on the inside and metal on the outside). For instance, Vivitar 105mm F2.5 is fantastic built and optics and can be had for around $350. On the other hand if this was 200mm macro, it would be in a segment of its own and probably generate more interest and sales...

Maybe they're making this lens for fans of THEIR lenses, not as alternatives to other lenses. They've put out some great lenses, and I can see their maybe being a group of people who want their lenses in specific.

It will also fill the gap between the 85 and 135 for their video lenses, which is great. I don't really get why people question what they are doing. They are a lens company. They're putting out lenses. I don't see anyone questioning Zeiss or Leica when they puts out a lenses.

It's just another option for people. Their 50mm and 135mm lenses are sharper than their Canon L equivalents. This lens very well could be sharper than most of what's out there at the moment.

By useless I meant : considering current offerings from Pentax, Tamron and Sigma, 100mm would have been the last macro lens I would have launched. 200mm would have been a much better market approach in my opinion...
