Well, I wasn't expecting a huge upgrade or changes in this version so to be honest I'm pleasantly surprised. The pixel-shifting thing is a pretty substantial new feature, as is the GPS, and the AF/sensor upgrades could be pretty significant - we don't know yet. For me, the pixel-shifting is probably the most significant thing if it works well. We'll have to wait and see how it works, but personally I'm hoping it will output 24MP raw files with improvements to noise, colour detail and artifacting, rather than bloated high pixel-count images (or at least have this as an option).

I don't care in the slightest about wi-fi. Slightly bothered about the flash but not much - maybe it will be worth losing it for the GPS. I'm a bit ignorant on GPS - can anyone tell me what the main benefits are?

My other slight disappointment is that I thought that with the changes to the viewfinder hump, they may be trialing a new viewfinder info system in advance of FF, which may use something like this to show the APS-C frame and possibly other crop options. Not going to cry about it though. Overall, a nice upgrade which will keep Pentax in the public eye until the FF release.

Yeah, I am definitely still intrigued by this camera. Though the left out wifi sounds strange. Easier to understand no flipscreen as that would maybe have required substantial changes on the body itself...this is a K3 II after all, not K2.

The sensor in the K-3 was already quite old. It was in the Nex-7 and A77 and probably some Nikons before it came in the K-3.
Nope. The NEX-7 and A77 used the oldest IMX096. Nikon were using Renesas sensor for the D3200 and Toshiba for the D7100 and D5200, then switched back to Sony with the D5300 and D5500 using the IMX193, which is probably the same sensor that Ricoh put in the K-3. And now there is a rumor that the D7200 uses the newest IMX271, but I'm not so sure about it...

I will buy this if the sensor is in same level with K-5 II in terms of noise and dynamic range. That's all I need. Of course the AF has to be at least in the samel level than it is in K-3.

That maybe right, but I didn't see much difference between them. according to this site (translate) the IMX271 is also in the a6000: Google Translate

There is at least one - IMX096 could be read at 12fps, and the newer IMX193 does just 8.7fps.

Wrong. It's the IMX210 with on chip phase detection.

I wonder what the power drain will be with the internal gps unit.

Sounds to me that this new camera is going to be a much greater improvement over the K3, much more so than the K5II was over the K5. Looking forward to seeing the details from Ricoh. I'm assuming with the flash gone that there will be some added features in the firmware related to external flashes.

K-5 to K-5 II, K-3 to K-3 II.
Evolutionary changes.

Pity about lack of pop-up flash. It's useful sometimes, for a variety of purposes. At least, I guess, for flash newbies the new Pentax AF201FG flash is available cheap. Maybe they will include it in some K-3 II bundles.

In regards to 'v II model' competitors, FWIW I note that the Canon 7D II also lacks built-in WiFi and NFC, but does include GPS. Nikon D7200 has WiFi and NFC, but lacks GPS. Sony A77 II has WiFi and NFC, but also lacks GPS. Interestingly, Pentax is aligning with Canon here.

However, all the other 'v II' models cited do retain a built-in flash, so Pentax is going out on a limb with that.

And why would Sony sign an exclusivity with Nikon ? Nikon have tried to switch supplier with Toshiba for the D7100, it was a miss, now they ask Sony, can we buy your sensors again ? They are not in a strong position to ask an exclusivity from Sony
Because of money? Exclusive contract even for a short period time cost big money, avoid your competition to get something maybe give you an edge on new camera buyers... just my opinion.

I would have thought most Pentaxians would be holding off any top end purchases for the Full Frame release?
