I think the dumping of the flash will prove to be a non issue. There will be bundles with the small or medium flash models, which will increase stock rotation and get the prices down through scale economies, so flash won't be lacking.
Part of the problem is that Pentax doesn't have a truly small flash. When I got my AF-200FG, I was surprised at its size and weight. They need a small/light flash, one that would even be comfortable on a Q camera.

I use the flash maybe once every 500-2000 photos. Buying a flash for that...? When I do want to take one with I am glad to have it, but... hm. And then I have to mount it. Bring it along all the time.

AF201FG. We can 'gram gripe' (akin to pixel peeping) about this or that small external flash, but Pentax DOES have one.

4.97 ounces w/o 2x AAA batteries. If I'm out for a walk and I need fill flash I can pull this out of my other pocket. If I'm carrying a bag I'll carry 3 Limiteds (FA or DA depending) and a 360FGZ.

Plus, a 201FG is perfect for a K-01 and useable on a Q.

I just can't make myself get all worked up about no onboard flash.

It works in a slave mode, does it have a master/controller mode?

I was interested to find the following sentence in the description of that flash:"In addition to TTL functionality, the 26 AF-1 also features a slave function that allows it to be triggered wirelessly from the camera or another flash." Their sales people seem to have imaged something the Pentax engineers haven't - putting wireless master into the camera. It would be especially nice if they could stuff master capability into a similar flash.

I've had a hard time finding any pictures of the 201FG actually mounted on a K/Q body. If the specs are to be trusted, it's actually smaller than the AF-160 that I carried for years as a "pocket flash" with my MF film bodies. The 201FG is probably the flash I wanted for my K-01 kit a couple years ago. Curse you, GBA!

Judging by the photos, it is smaller than the AF200FG which takes 4AAs and is surprisingly bulky (think FA31). But even more importantly, the tilt head will allow you to store it flattish, slipping it into a slash pocket in a bag instead of taking up a lens spot.

AF201FG - $146
2.6'' × 2.9'' × 1.2'' H/W/D
Weight: Approx. 141 g (5.0 oz.) without batteries
2xAAA batteries

AF200FG - $80
2.7 x 3.3 x 3.7" H/W/D
Weight: 6.8 oz. without batteries
4x AA batteries

Including batteries the 200FG will be significantly heavier than the 201FG

Yes but as written 201 only takes AAA batteries, and only 2 of them ; whereas 200 takes 4 AA : that makes à huge difference in terms of durability...

I honestly couldn't care less about the removed flash, as I am used to shoot with radio triggers anyway.
What I am really missing from the semi-pro bodies is a professional tethering solution, I hope the upcoming FF will get this.

just saw the release. Hmm, now that is an unexpected upgrade to the K3 and something I'd be interesting in purchasing.

Since i shoot 645, I was thinking the FF would be lost on me but that I might keep an APS-C just for long tele and astro shooting...what a pleasant surprise that this may be a reasonable solution...and the GPS built in is a nice touch!

so, maybe i'm one of the 30 people interested, lol.
