Pentax HD DA 16-85mm review by Photozone and Ephotozine: highly recommended!

Just two days ago Photozone.de and Ephotozine.com they published their review of the new Pentax 16-85mm. Because of the same date of this lens review, I wonder if both pages use to work together.

The charts of the sharpness performance are more favorable in ephotozine. This lens is a good alternative for Pentax users looking sharpness in the center and border at the wide angle, żbetter than Pentax 17-70mm and Sigma 17-50 f/2.8?.

Ouch and I thought that was a lens with no use for.

So much for naysayers....

The resolution charts for borders look good, but not sure this is born out in the sample shots. Even at middle apertures there is still quite a bit of softness towards the edges. Some of this could probably be improved with more optimal focusing to account for field curvature, but it still doesn't look great. It's also disappointing to see the decentering issue in one of the copies tested, which shows up in the Photozone tests even at f8 on a K5.

This may be one of the best standard zooms Pentax has produced, but I still think we should expect a bit more than this at this price point.

What makes you think so? I compared the Photozone results for the Sigma 17-50mm mounted on a D7000 vs. the 16-85 on a K-5. The Sigma 17-50 is clearly a sharper lens at equivalent apertures, which is what I expected.

You can't compare sharpness between system ..... unfortunately, but the Sigma might be better, we need to wait for a comparison on a Pentax camera.

It is also 1 mm shorter on the wide side and 35mm on the other... and not weather sealed. Different type of lens with different limitations.

Exactly. I was targeting I shoot it the minute it is announced kind of reaction. Liking its tested behaviour is something else.

I myself agree the price is a bit puzzling.
