4x5" film duplicator

At Photonext 2015 which begun yesterday June 2nd in Tokyo, Ricoh is exhibiting the prototype of a 4x5" film duplicator.

Commercialisation still remains to be decided.

The pictures above come from a report published by Digital Camera Watch:

PHOTONEXT 2015

and Google Translate for the Google-translation.

Oh my god. And price will be even worse than the current one but this thing mounted on a 645Z would make marvels IMO.
Scans no more.

I don't want to sound like a snark, but I couldn't help but think: 'surely Ricoh's engineers must have better things to do than develop this'?.

Like bring a full-frame DSLR to market.

I think this product is aimed at encouraging the sizeable group of Pentax 645 film users in Japan to move on to digital. This makes the idea of Pentax digital 645 more attractive to them since they could digitise their slides and move over to digital wholesale. I don't think it's a coincidence that this product has mainly been shown at Japanese events.

Do you honestly think that making a FF DSLR takes as little effort as making a slide duplicator?
Do you honestly think that Ricoh Imaging's engineers should do nothing but work on the FF, regardless of their specialization? (note that adding more people to a late project will only make it later).
Do you honestly think that accessories aren't needed?

With this, I hope you have your answer.

This product may have a significant market in archive work.

Add a good tilt shift for 645Z and guys using 4x5 have more reasons to go to Ricoh's business.

There's an archival products market they are aiming at here.

Probably necessary, product.

It was supposed to come out last year, but looks like another vaporwear product.

This is made for large format (the smallest size, but still large format). You're linking to the duplicator made for small and medium format, which is available - thus no vaporware.

I want one! Of course I know i'll have to jump through many hoops to even think about getting one. Availability? Price?

Does anyone know if you HAVE to use a Pentax camera? From what I can see it doesn't really look like you do.

It was announced in 2014 and been shipping since 2015. Why is this a new announcement?

Gotcha

Since you can accomodate 6x9cm on the 4x5 I guess the older one will go out of production.

Not smallest size! You forgot the 2x3 format (takes 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 sheet film)...small, but still large format I would love to have a Technikardan 23s.

(...yeah, I know the format is 6x9cm...)
