I'm devastated that this wasn't about Pentax compatibility with the new Pizza Hut projector box.

is it just me or this has just terrible production value? especially for something which 'changes everything'... i mean half of the independent youtube reviews have better delivery or image examples...

Granted, it's a collaborative venture with a lighting system maker, intended to bring a new feature to some Pentax cameras.
The Ricoh marketing manager was in the meeting, but only to talk about how the product benefited Ricoh. It doesn't appear that Ricoh was part of any of the design or collaboration.

It syncs strobes with the K-3 up to 1/8000. I'm sure people will find some creative ways to use that.

I think it will definitely drive some 645Z sales which will drive more development from Ricoh. If Ricoh can get volume up (production) they can have a huge impact on the very small MF market.
You are probably right. I just figured the price would be pretty rich for most APS-C users.

US $2000 for the 'HSS Starter Kit - special offer' is indeed a bit high for non-pros.

I don't know much about the flash technology that Pentax uses, but I would have thought that some technical collaboration would have benefited the development of the new system, though maybe it was simple enough to reverse engineer without that. It'd be in Ricoh's interest to have done so, regardless, at some level.

Even for the average pro its a big price tag. $6,000 for a 3 light kit + spare batteries.. At least it uses the Bowens mount for modifiers. Einstein's are $500 each and offer an awful lot of performance for the money. 4 Einstein 640s are $2,000.

Well, it's a huge advantage to control the light needed to create a picture, that's for sure. But, like some of us would say, it's really expensive.

So they announce something they didn't create...

Sounds like they need another product to stamp their name on the back of since we complained about them doing that to the K-3?....

Any reason to think that it is also an improvement over Cactus??
There are three differences to the Cactus system:
  1. HSS is possible without using an HSS-capable flash for triggering or using remote shutter release.
  2. The lights are a lot more powerful.
  3. The prices are much higher.
Another probable difference is that the PrioLite system introduces a P-TTL based (pre-flash) delay. While the strobes will not issue a pre-flash, the timing will most likely be that of P-TTL.

A manual system, like the Cactus system, does not introduce such an exposure lag.

With a Cactus V6 trigger and Cactus RF60 flashes one can also use shutter speeds up to 1/8000s.

Normally this requires the use of an HSS-capable flash for triggering purposes but one may also use a remote shutter release technique that only requires a cheap shutter release cable.

The techniques referenced above can be used with any lighting equipment that supports manually engaging HSS mode, such as the Cactus RF60, to achieve HSS lighting, but it can also be used with any lighting system to achieve HyperSync, i.e., using the relatively long duration of a full power flash to illuminate the full frame at any shutter speed.

While I welcome the new Pentax support from Priolite, I don't think it will have a large impact on most Pentaxians due to its pricing structure. I'm hopeful that similar, alternative solutions with more palatable pricing will become available to Pentaxians soon.
