I think we'll see this one for FF once the Pentax comes out. I expect Sigma will want to at least test the waters there.

Looks about the same length and little fatter (82mm filter) than the 18-35 (72mm filter), so a big lens.
Some people avoid zooms because primes tend to do better on speed and sharpness. Maybe Sigma has convinced themselves that limiting to this range allows them to challenge primes, but 2X wouldn't meet that goal. Presumably this big lens will have a corresponding big price tag, and making it sharper and faster would make it more competitive.

The opinion on this lens seems to be riddled with internal contradiction and lack of agreement on what the purpose of a zoom lens is.

Some people feel the purpose of a zoom lens is versatility, that it should provide as much flexibility as possible. But doing so involves compromises to image quality and so a chunk of these people complain that the versatile zooms don't offer enough image quality for them. Now we have a zoom with limited range that is probably optimized for IQ and people are complaining its not versatile enough.

It comes down to how you think of a zoom. If you think a lens like this is too limited to be useful, then you may be stuck in the beginner mindset that more millimeters is better. Instead, think of it as a prime that offers some bonus flexibility. I've come to see my Sigma 18-35 as a 21-24mm lens that has some extra padding I can use when it becomes necessary. That's what this is: you'll park it at, say, 30mm or so and then have access to a bit more wide angle and a bit more zoom when you need it. That's better than carrying a 30mm prime and finding you can't get the entire subject in the frame because you have no more room to backup.

I love my FA31 but indoors at museums and other tight spaces...that Sigma offers way too much additional bonus to be retired.

This lens would sell well in K-mount, because so far Pentax primes between 15mm and 35mm are all slower than f3.2*.

I'm confused by your statement -- what about FA 31 f/1.8? And if you're looking for legacy lenses, the FA* 24 f/2?

It seems to me this lens will be available only on autumn for C and N. And next year for Pentax

Doesn't feel terribly useful. Such a small focal range. Feels like you would do better just picking your favorite focal length and getting a prime in that range -- Sigma 35 f1.4, FA 31 limited. It is sure to be smaller and it isn't like this lens will offer much more flexibility over a prime -- and it is sure to be big.

On the other hand, the 24-70 f2.8 options have a very nice range and feel fast enough for most purposes.

Fa20-35/4 or a 18-35 poses no problem but a 24-35/2 does ? I can't understand you guys...

And it is not as if I was a big Sigma fan...

EDIT: same goes for Tokina 11-16 and 11-20.

Maybe this is a start of a trend. Let's replace fixed primed with narrow range zooms. Instead of a 31mm, 43mm, and 77mm trio we will have 24-35mm, 40-55mm, and 70-90mm zooms.

If you want a corner-to-corner zoom with a fast aperture, a shorter zoom range makes sense. Remember that this is a full-frame lens. It would indeed by quite pointless to use on APS-C, where it would hardly even be a wide-angle.

I don't get this obsession with seriously big/heavy lenses. I mean two or three primes are smaller/lighter than this monster. If I had to choose I'd rather go with their 18-35mm f/1.8 which is a much more useful lens IMHO.

I like old glass a lot, but I was speaking about the current lineup. You are right about the FA 31mm, though!

I wouldn't get a FA 20-35 or an 18-35.

When I put a zoom on, it isn't because I need the fastest lens out there, it is because I want to cover several focal lengths moderately well. When you have the possibility of losing one stop to f2.8 but gaining significantly more focal lengths (24-70), I would usually choose the latter. If I don't need much flexibility, then I would just go with a prime.

I do think really wide zooms that have fast apertures do tend to have smaller zoom ranges (14-24, 11-16, etc), but I wouldn't consider this really wide, but rather a normal zoom with the only thing going for it being the f2 aperture.

That is a serious heavy lens. To compensate maybe one buys a light camera.
