Why is every time Tamron/Tokina announce a new lens there is a automatic assumption that there will be a rebadged version for Pentax? Yes Pentax rebadged a few super-zooms from Tamron but why it is engrained in some people's logic that Pentax is not designing their own lens, instead they would just use other people's design and slap a Pentax logo on it?

Sorry for the rant but I've not seen any concrete evidence so far that Pentax is rebranding *ANY* new lens from *ANY OTHER* brand for the incoming FF.
agreed.
and wasn't there actually just ONE rebranded lens from Tamron?

Didn't Nikon rebadge one or both of them also? I guess all new Nikon lenses must be rebadged!

No. Nikon have their own 18-200mm (2 versions, both f/3.5-5.6, the first one launched in 2005, the second in 2009) and 18-300mm (2 versions as well, the first one being f/3.5-5.6 launched in 2012 and the second one, f/3.5-6.3 and more compact, launched last year).

Sony did rebadge the Tamron superzooms.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure there was a Nikon lens that was a rebadged Tamron. Anyway, by googling I find that almost every Nikon lens out there has been claimed to be a rebadged tamron. It is not only here this nonsense florish

I would be surprised if a 24-70 would end up being a rebadge as that seems relatively easy to create, as opposed to an ultra wide zoom, where creating a 14-24-ish zoom that is competitive with Nikon has to be their goal (and I don't see a history of anything like that in their lens portfolio history).

I'm not sure how to consider the "rebadge" thing. In the end, for any part of the value chain, there's always the question "make or buy" that can be asked. I don't mind most parts of a lens being outsourced, especially if the spec is designed to fit a system with differentiated features, defined as Pentax features according to Ricoh. Who knows is Sigma and Tamron are not also able to offer lens design and manufacturing services? I guess at some point of a lower volume budget, it might be more cost effective to have a lens fully designed and manufactured by Tamron, according to Pentax specifications provided by Ricoh. For instance I was watching a documentary about Sigma lens factory showing lens components being delivered by Hoya, and assembled by Sigma. The same goes for cmos sensors: i've read that Nikon designed their own sensors; well, I strongly doubt about this since the NRE for tooling and know how required for cmos sensor design is miles away from the tooling and skill set required for camera design. In my opinion, it is much more plausible that Nikon gave unique spec to Sony to implement tweaks into a variant of a cmos sensor baseline model delivered to Nikon only, while Sony imaging and others such as Ricoh using the baseline sensor for example.

I would think that Ricoh can take most of the Pentax designs and update them with modern coatings and the addition of ED/Super-ED glass. Throw in modern AF motors and WR and they will have some great glass.

If you use glass with different optical properties, like ED or Super ED, you have to redesign the whole optical formula.

The camera manufacturers are design and assembly outfits. Almost all parts are made by subcontractors. Some mix up this with rebadging which is something entirely different...

I keep my fingers crossed for a modern F*600 f4 My friend has the Nikon 600 f4 - worth what he paid for it - sharp, fast focusing etc.

I am sure there would be some arm wrestling in the home front but I am guessing I would save and get it.

Looking at the latest roadmap, for 2015 I see a "D FA Large Diameter Standard Zoom". That has to be something like 24-70 f2.8, right ?

And the "D FA large diameter wide zoom" would be something like the Nikon's 14-24 or 16-35 ?
