I'm not sure whether this had been announced before, but there is now a release date of August 21st for the Sigma 18-300 Contemporary in Japan.

Finally! I have been waiting for this lens to be released since they introduced it for Canon and Nikon. I was feeling left out.
Thank for the info!

Excellent at the wide end, good at the long end... according to these guys. It's not a DA*60-250 or DA* 300 ƒ4, but, really? Who expected that?

At 300mm the 55-300 is rated much better. That's all I would want to know, myself.

Thanks Norm. It looks quite capable, indeed and has a fair price. I guess the Pentax version will lose OS
I'll keep that one under the radar.

I don't understand why Pentax themselves don't release a lens like this with weather seals.. that would make for a really nice travel lens. when you are in an environment where changing lenses isn't an option... be it from challenging terrain, weather, or lack of time (fast paced setting).

Take a look here....
SMC Pentax-DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

A Tamron zoom rebadged under the Pentax name,
The Tamron is right now 416 CDN, the pentax, the same lens with the Pentax SDM motor, no quick shift and no screw drive is $799 CDN.
http://www.amazon.ca/Pentax-DA-18-270mm-F3-5-6-3-ED-SDM/dp/B0099ORFFG/ref=sr...words=18-270mm

http://www.amazon.ca/Tamron-18-270mm-3-5-6-3-Built-Cameras/dp/B004FN1W2I/ref...words=18-270mm

"Pentaxing" the lens, more than doubled the cost.

But if you were serious about this type of lens.... what's 25mm among friends?

No weather seals.

Yeah, exactly.

In spite of all the kind words bestowed upon the 55-300, and although it performs admirably at lower focal lengths, I was not at all impressed with its performance at the upper end. And when I received my DA* 300, I felt that my lack of enthusiasm was vindicated.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I can't imagine an 18-300 that would perform acceptably at all focal lengths.

Exactly... the 55-300 is just the best of the consumer 300s, and none of those are close to a DA*. The 55-300 is the closest. Expect everything else to be a step down from the 55-300 which is a step down from the 60-250 or 300ƒ4.

Travel all-in-one zooms sell well for their intended market.

If I was going on a longish trip and changing lenses was going to be an issue, I'd definitely invest in one of these.

If they made it WR I'd get one. I saw the review in Youtube and Sigma 18-300 has better image quality than Tamron 16-300. Tamron beats Sigma because it's a little wider, weather sealed and has a better AF. Still, if Sigma were WR I'd get one.

I basically agree, though I don't often find I need something as long as 300 when walking around. I'd probably be prepared to sacrifice a bit of distance for better overall quality.
