Large sensor Theta rumoured for September

This is an interesting rumour that has been posted at Photo Rumors. A new Theta with a larger sensor to be launched next month.

http://photorumors.com/2015/08/13/new-ricoh-theta-camera-rumored-for-september/

I think it should be taken with a pinch of salt, because Photo Rumors has a very patchy record. They don't mention any source. But it would be very interesting if true.

Just because it get a larger sensor, then might not be very large,

The Theta seems to use a very small sensor, probably 1/2.3 - 1/2.5".
I have not been able to find sensor size specification on Theta.

So it's possible that they update the sensor to 1/1.7".

I'd buy one if the image quality were better. It'd be a great vacation camera.

The theta is already a wonderful gadget. A model with improved image quality would certainly make sense and maybe convince more people to pick one up. I for one would love it if cropping were a bit more forgiving.

Has Ricoh shown Theta videos on VR headsets at any other events since CP+ in February? That was what convinced me that Theta could be really significant. It was weird but really cool to be "inside" a moving video image, even though for me it was all blurry because I'm so short sighted without my glasses. Actually, it probably enhanced the experience for me, because I was spared from the pixellation. I don't know if Theta is the future of photography, but I think it's the future of something. With VR headsets coming onto the market in the next year, I think it will become more clear what Ricoh is trying to achieve with Theta. As far as I know, the only other devices that can record this kind of video are far bigger and more costly.

I'd buy one if it didn't have a five-minute video limitation. We were just talking at work about building a pipeline inspection robot (these things start at around $13K) and if I could mount two Thetas on it (facing at 90-degree angles, one at each end) it would be perfect. But we're not inspecting a 15,000-foot pipeline segment with a five-minute video cap. It would need to be capable of recording either much longer video or feeding back a live view through a super-long cable. Or it would need a video intervalometer that would re-start a new video every time one finished.

Next headline news will be: "Strange sect of people organized at pentaxforums.com whose members believes in doomsday and pentax fullframe did mass suicide earlier this morning. Guiness representative confirms that this is the largest spontaneous seppuku event ever".

I second that. My wife and I took a vacation in Europe (France, Germany, & The Czech Republic) and this type of camera would be perfect to catch the atmosphere (especially in Gothic Cathedrals and the beautiful architecture). Although I took lots of snap with an Ultra wide Lens (10-24mm), it just did not capture the spirit of the place!

If only the quality of the video and images could be better via a larger sensor. Judging by the videos on youtube, would require at least a 1" sensor or bigger.

For those interested, here is another camera that has the same concept of the an all immersive capable camera. The quality is much better than the Theta but the camera (called the bubl cam) is also bigger.

Here's the link below ...
