I can think of 3 possible reasons for the delay:
- an unexpected problem - as you said - which needs more time to be solved properly
- changes deemed necessary in order to have a competitive product. Perhaps they figured out the competition will have 'something' well before the next Pentax FF. Perhaps they figured out they have a much better chance by implementing their own 'something', even if the price is a delay.
- there's no problem, there's no project change, it just takes longer than expected. It happens all the time.

sensor or processor availability could be the problem. I'm sure they have prototypes, but production delays could postpone the camera.

That would be either #1 - unexpected issues with the vendor which can't supply components in time - or #2 - changing a component for a new one, but which either require extra time to integrate (almost a given) or it's not available yet.

Or the image processor/data pipeline hardware (more likely in my view). Performance of the Milbeaut M7 probably is not adequate for 36+ MP sensor and I don't think a faster one is available yet. And who knows about availability/cost since Fujitsu sold the Milbeaut line last March, iirc?

Japanese we're never influenced by the Romans, and they don't pay a whole lot of attention to things Roman, ( unlike ourselves who basically are a modern extension of the Roman empire, we just moved the Capital to Washington instead of Rome). Someone posted that Japanese spring starts Feb.2

Countdown 1 runs to Oct 6. Then we begin Countdown 2, which will run to the FF 'debut day' in Spring, the exact date of which which may be revealed at the end of Countdown 1.

I think you need an announcement of a countdown to an announcement announcing details of a countdown to another announcement which announcement will be about another announcement later. That should do it.
