That probably depends on the company and their environment. I'm fairly confident that Canon released the 5DS partly to milk money from those who must have the camera which will give them "highest MP" bragging rights, but also to enhance the brand's reputation in the competition they're in with Nikon at all levels of DSLR. I'm not sure why Ricoh bought Pentax, but I'm guessing that being a dominant player in the DSLR wars is not high on their list of goals (more likely, I think they bought Pentax because of technology that will help in other areas of their business, but making Pentax into a more successful camera company certainly would not be a bad outcome from their point-of-view).
