Blah, blah, blah
Really, just the fact that nobody else here noticed this gigantic logic failure should be adequate proof of its lack of significance.

You seem to be looking for problems where none exist. Relax.

True. But 42MP is not needed if you don't print at 5ft either. If higher resolution is not needed, I will be happier if I don't see them at all (or less). Too easy to click 100% view on computer although we all know it is not helpful.
It was more a commentary on the fact that a sensor out-resolving any lens is a silly idea as 99% of the time we all display them at 500px :-)

I guess you are right.
But why not just use FF lenses on FF camera and use DA lenses on APC cameras? Why should we worry about the resolution on FF in crop model is lower than K3? User can afford $3000 FF camera should be able to afford a 2nd camera of $600 (K3 is about this price right now, K5II is even much lower).
I really don't get the resolution game recently Sony and Canon are playing again recently. 18 mp on K5II and 24MP on A7 are so perfect!
The K5II has 16 MP not 18

Agreed. Yet they really really really need to extend better support all the way down to us 'meager' APS-C folk in the US.

Is it likely (from a business point of view) that this service center would do repair work on FF and APS-C cameras/lens instead of poorcision?

You mean 16 mp on K5ii is perfect? :-) well i used the 645z for a while and those 50 mp are yummy 😋 as the ISO and dynamic range. And the sensor of the 42 mp has some potential, Pentax will make more of it then Sony.. (Sony=cooked raw files)
After something raw is cooked, it's no longer raw, that would be false advertising...

That's the main problem. Now, all FF owners have to upgrade to new HD/high resolution lenses!!
The 42 MP camera's pixels are larger than the 24 MP K-3, if you don't see imperfections in the K-3, you won't see them in the Full Frame...lenses are way better than people seem to give them credit for. Now if you're just looking for an excuse to justify a purchase to your wife... she probably won't know any better.

The 51 MP Canon sensor should be about the same pixel size as the K-3.

A D810 is 14.8 EV DR, a Sony 7RII is 13.9 according to DxO. If Pentax can't squeeze an extra EV out of the sensor, I'm not sure how popular it's going to be with us landscape guys.

...plus, these extra functions make money for camera makers. Just like cars, luxury cars makes more $$ for the makers at both the selling price and service. And we will only see more and more features loaded in the car. The result? a way too complicated car that will not stop and will speed up by itself (you know what I am talking about), and no one can figure out why and how.
Just look at all of the Corollas parked next to the Lexus'.

This is supposed to be about photography. Why not a FF camera with NO features??? TV, AV, M, DOF, high Mpix count, high dynamic range, massive buffer, minimal energy consumption, of course fully WX-proof/cold-proof, built like a tank, cost maybe $1500 street price. That's it. Just buy it and go take pictures!!!

Rant over.
because thats the Nikon Df and it costs way too much

I don't understand why Pentax "has" to make it so that the APS-C crop meets the resolution of the K3. They want to sell more lenses, if you buy a FF and it can shoot ASPC at 24 it just gives you an excuse to delay buying the new FF glass. If it crops down to say, 15mp, maybe not so much, you may be more enticed to buy that new 50mm or 24-70, or 70-200 a little faster. a 42mp sensor is also going to make it silly expensive. the A7r 2 is already a ton of cash, if anyone thinks a 42mp Pentax camera is going to be half the price of the A7r 2 you are delusional.

IMO things are simpler. There are good reasons for a higher resolution:
- to offer a significant improvement over APS-C, even at low ISO
- to be seen as "competitive" with Canon/Nikon mid-range, which have high resolution FF
- to have an usable APS-C crop (but not necessarily at the K-3's level) - this won't hurt IMO, but will make the migration easier.
Precise calculation is not needed, identical performance to a K-3 is not needed, 42MP might be considered required from a marketing point of view (and surely, it won't be $1600 regardless of the sensor).
