The tamron ultrasonic is a ring motor system. It is as reliable as canon or nikon systems

Ricoh has already branded a Tamron lens as SDM...the DA 18-250270. There was much discussion about using the term SDM, but everyone agrees that it uses Tamron's USD.

$1900 would have been out of my price range, but $1300 is quite good. I like the look compared to the Tamron model, something about Pentax's green ring jives with me.

$1300 intro price means $1100 on sale, and $900-950 within a year's time. As predicted based on the other recent lens releases (20-40, etc).

My point stands.
Where is new price?

IN fact, just using my 18-135 DC compared to my DA*60-250, I'd be really reluctant to buy another SDM lens, it's not terrible for speed, but it's also not $1300 great either. But then I also have an FA 35-80 and an DA-J 18-35. So simply stated, if I want a lens with a geared lens, I have two already. This will be DC and fast focusing, or a lot of us are going to take a pass.
DC and SDM are micro-motors. Pentax has no ring motors.
DC is the same SDM with more simple and reliable construction.

Maybe they could've made it f/2.4 to attract more folks from other brands?

If it comes in at $1300 as some have suggested it will be attractive Canikon users. The Canikon 24-70/2.8s are ~$1800 new or $1300 used.

FWIW, for those with sticker-shock, there still seem to be lots of FF-compatible Tamron 28-75 f2.8's floating around new for K-mount at very good prices ...

I've had one for a few years and it's been very good on the K-5/K-3. While DxOMark suggests that it isn't as good as the 24-70 Tamron on 36MP FF, esp at the wide end, it seems that it will still be an OK performer.

Not exactly.

Just like USM, SDM is Pentax' generic name for "ultrasonic" piezo-type motors. Canon had both micromotor and ring-type USM, while Pentax made themselves only micromotor type SDM. However, the rebadged Tamron is using an "ultrasonic" ring-type motor so it's branded as SDM.
A ring-type SDM would not require gears like a micromotor-type SDM.

DC is Pentax' generic name for direct current motors; AFAIK they are not piezo motors. There's a Pentax patent about a ring-type DC motor, it was said to be implemented into the new D FA lenses but I don't remember seeing a definite proof for that - perhaps someone can clarify?

I see nothing wrong with re-badging or modifying a currently available design if it helps get the end product on the market faster. Maybe Ricoh wants to focus their energies on other optical designs that are unique to them. These designs may carry higher margin.

Neither do I.
And whilst there is no VC due to Pentax ibis, that lens could even have better contrast rendering than the Tamy version.
Plus it is quite compact, all that is good news.

Well the 24/28-105 (D FA Standard Zoom) will have to be an in-house design...

The D FA Large diameter wide zoom is the Tamron 15-30. The DA Wide zoom is any bodies guess, Tokina has a 12-28 F4 and that looks about right going by the line on the roadmap...

I hope the info about it being a Tamron rebadge is wrong. Lackluster review at Tamron SP 24-70 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD review - Introduction - LensTip.com

99% of all landscape images are made at focal lengths at 24mm and longer (for FF). Longer close focusing distances, more prone to flare and (possibly) difficulty in using filters (particularly split nd) than most other lenses, is making it something landscape shooters will avoid.

Ummm...Neither does the Nikon 14-24, and many landscape photographers swear by that lens.
I guess even more swear at it...
It is clearly a tool for photojournalists in tight places....
