2700AUD(current exchange rate) for a non-star lens....I shudder to think what the body+lens combo price would be.

Correct, and no VC.
The Tamron also proposes full-time manual override in autofocus mode.

Would be an interesting approach for Ricoh to release a cheaper 24-70 f/2.8 kit, then (presumably) bring a start lens with almost the same specifications, plus AW, maybe SDM, aero bright, improved optics etc.

With other manufacturers the 24-70 f/2.8 range is reserved for the pro-standard zoom, whereas cheaper FF kits are usually 24-120 f/4 or similar.

Is this a situation where Pentax used an existing optical formula to create their own version with their own coatings, or is this just a straight rebadge? I would prefer the former, but I guess we'll see.

Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon AFA007N-700 B&H

Tamron is 1300 USD. Tamron changed to Pentax and became 1900 USD.

The revised price mentioned above looks better, but is still too rich:
160,000.00 JPY = 1,920.39 AUD

Local prices for the Tamron 24-70 are in the $1000 - $1200 AUD range.

To put it into perspective, local price for the new Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8E ED VR is $2,895.00, non VR version is in the $2500 range, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is $ 2,372.00.

But yeah, compare to its Tamron origin, it's quite a bit of premium.

Hopefully this shows in the coatings etc.

You want wide, fast zoom glass, you're going to pay for it through the nose, seems to be the message.

So does this mean there is yet a 24-70 F2.0 DFA* AW to come?

That'd mean Ricoh would outdo Sigma - at least aperture and range wise

Well the plot thickens, they delayed the camera body (ff) but not the standard zoom that was to accompany it, so maybe they will leak a few accessories they are happy with, cords ? case ? maybe a high end flash ?, grip (the BG10 from China was available before the MZ-S from Japan), most Japanese who have commented on Digicame site say its a Tamron, but SDM dictates its a Tokina !.

It's going to be hard to sell a * lens with the same range and aperture just because it has a little better weather sealing. F2 will be too big. I wasn't serious. At least the Tamron can compete with Nikon and Canon, though Canon has more sharpness.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM on Canon EOS 5D Mark III versus Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED on Nikon D610 versus Tamron SP 24-70mm F2.8 Di VC USD Nikon on Nikon D610 - Side by side lens comparison - DxOMark

Well DPreview said the Tamron "also behaves well with regards to the less-quantifiable aspects of image quality - it works well when shooting into the light, and generally gives attractively-blurred out-of-focus backgrounds."

Add the possibility that Jun Hirakawa may have designed it and Pentax coatings (and maybe special glass), and it is starting to look like a Pentax lens anyways (except the size ).

But how committed is Ricoh to Full Frame? The 150-450 and 70-200 work just as well on aps-c where a 24-70 is awkward and they rebadge/clad a Tamron. They can pull out just as easily and still sell the long zooms.
