Probably because not many people can afford an 82 mm filter!

Fully agreed.

The lens hood was manufactured by a Tamron subcontractor, and delivered to their Hirosaki plant, to be boxed with the Pentax badged lens, the window is a Pentax patent device so cannot be manufactured by Tamron, ( if you observe the 28-105mm f4-5.6 FA IF, the 62mm lens cap is in the style of the original Tamron centre pinch design, but has Pentax on the front, this was before the latest Pentax design centre pinch caps came into use), these small problems occur in contract manufacturing.

Of course it could and might have been, Tamron acting as subcontractor for Pentax. Do you think that companies manufacture themselves (may not subcontract / procure from a third party) all the devices they have patented?

They couldn't marry the tamron hood bayonet to the pentax hood window. Their will be sellers in China who don't care about protected design and make such a hood .

"Made in Japan" does not always mean Made in Japan. When Kodak had a Chinese company making it's 35mm P&S cameras engineers comeing back would talk about the cameras of another company made on the next line over. They would all be stamped "Made in Japan".

You have got it the other way round: Pentax acts as a selling subcontractor of Tamron.
6 months before the release of the major new camera line and the new future of the K-mount, Ricoh comes to introduce three rebadged OEM products: 2 Chinese small cameras with 'Ricoh' stamped on them, and one Tamron lens with 'Pentax' stamped on them.

That is what happens when once a 5-star restaurant suddenly drops 2-stars. It sells microwaved frozen food anyone can buy in the supermarket .. but (!) .. with half a tea spoon of their unique sauce. In other words, a tragedy of ancient Greek proportions.

For the better of the confused company, a challenge should be made. To paraphrase Mr Ego:

Ricoh, provide us a unique perspective, that goes well with a bottle of excellently preserved memories.
Which means, provide unique designs that make unique photographs, unique memories.
And when the waiter totally disconnected from the history of the iconic restaurant looks at you, confused, simplify, "Do not dare to serve some reheated pastry. Hit me with your best shot".

I guess they just wanted to capitalize on all the good will that SDM name is associated with...

Are they aware of how many people on this forum will never buy another lens with SDM?

Or maybe they feel the actual number of diehard SDM complainers is a very small minority.

It's not like Pentax recently made a DFA 150-450 and is also bringing out a DFA*70-200, both of which are Pentax lenses and Pentax designs. And it's not like the 150-450 is pretty universally praised.

Such a horrendous tragedy.

I'm just waiting for Pentax to kill his father and marry his mother.

Perhaps they own some 'Rights' to the SDM designation when applied to focusing motors.
