Uh-oh, will folks fight over what is the sharpest?

The reason I ask is because of an upcoming trip that will require packing light. Even though it seems like overkill to use a FF lens on APS-C, if this lens is significantly sharper (and with less CAs at f/2.8) than the DA*16-50 then I'll buy it for the trip. To bad the FF is delayed...

Somehow those two statements don't seem to go together. The 24-70 weighs 40% more than the 16-50.

True! I meant more in terms of number of lens; I'd like to bring just one zoom (in place of a zoom and primes) and one UWA.

I posted this elsewhere, but I did get the lens tonight. It is a chunk. Quiet and pretty speedy auto focus. Seems sharp at f2.8 throughout the range. Has some issues with flare, but not surprising how much glass is there. No purple fringing that I could see.

This is my son at 70mm f2.8 (full size on Flickr).

Thanks for sharing the pic, but when I try to download/view the full-size image, I'm forced to sign up for some kind of Yahoo account. Am I missing something? I haven't had this problem viewing flickr images in the past...

Looking at the full sized image, it looks a little soft, but in quite an attractive way for a portrait. It would be interesting to see a comparison that is stopped down a little.

It certainly could be the lens, but at 70mm, handheld, shooting a human subject, there is also a possibility for some softness to creep in. But like I said above, I'm not able to view the full-size image for some reason.

Great looking portrait. I would call that lens rendering pleasing.

It seems to be back focusing slightly on your camera. Look at his hair just past his forehead and the wall.. they are sharper than his eyes and bridge of his nose.

Hard to tell, if you don't know what the active focus point was.

It is a little hard to say. He's four and doesn't know how to hold still, even for a portrait. Probably not the best photo to post, but the best I could do at the moments notice.

I certainly will test focus and see if it needs adjusting on my cameras, but I don't have time at this point.

Thanks for posting, Rondec! Can't wait to see what the bokeh looks like on FF.

Yes if he is moving towards and away from the camera slightly it could alter it too. Though if he was staying put I'd say it looks like backfocus. Either way I think the lens probably has a tad more sharpness to show

Proper tests will be posted in due time. I'm just glad Rondec got his lens today and posted a sample for us! The FF and 70-200 delays were like Christmas getting cancelled, so it's nice to see samples from a new product that shipped on time.
