$2,300 versus $1,300.
I'm not talking about the price. I'm complain about Pentax. Why can't they make their own?

What is wrong with Pentax? Can't they even make their own lenses for FF? What kind of company is this?
I know right? Like car companies can't make their own tires! The horror!

Seriously Pentax has been rebranding lenses for quite some time.

This strategy saves any company resources (time and money) getting a product out.

If the end result is worth it, why not?

HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm F2.8 ED SDM WR Announced - Pentax Announcements | PentaxForums.com

The new 24-70mm F2.8 is being launched at a price of $1299 and will start shipping in late October. Pre-order below:

Excellent news on the price front! I think this signals a more budget FF camera, poised to fight against the D610/6D/A7II. I think Pentax has a better chance in this segment, as Canikon have been very stingy with features on their entry-level cameras. The Sony is something else. If it could combine a compact size with a ton of nice features, it could make a splash. At the very least, quite a few people will be impressed by the price of that zoom.

Would you pay $2400 for a Pentax-made D FA*? If not, your complaining is exaggerated.

And FTR, I'm a bit upset about this rebranding stuff... I realize though that $1300 (if I decide to get it) means I would have more money for primes.

Pentax could do just make star version but normal version. I really don't understand this.

They can make them, and they do. But they charge significantly more money for them.

In this case they've chosen to modify and improve a third-party lens designed by a legendary designer who once was under contract to Pentax, and sell it at a price that will attract new customers to the brand. This is a good brand marketing decision.

Explained? I don't see any explanation. They could just name is star lens. They made too complicated situation now.

"new generation SDM"?

having SDM failed on my DA*16-50, I need something more than saying a "new SDM" to convince me buy anything SDM, or improve your warranty.

seriously, my $200 dollar Osprey backpack have life time warranty with great quality, this $1300 lens have 1 year warranty (with failed record)? need to do better.

Sooooo.. now i wonder.. for the people that said that the Pentax FF was aiming just the Pro market judging by the price of the 70-200 and 150-450... would they still think the same??

I mean.. $1300 isnt a bad price.. perhaps it will land at the $1000 ..

This proves that we can not judge a camera just for the lenses that they are releasing.. at this time we dont really know what will pentax como out when they finally announce the FF body.

Price is $1300, per the news release on the original post of this thread.

Pentax HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm f/2.8ED SDM WR Lens 21310 B&H
"New Release!
You Pay: $1,296.95"

You're welcome to go find someone else selling it for $1900 and pay that amount though.

And as far as whether Pentax can make their own lenses, they made their own DFA 150-450, and their own DFA*70-200. And as far as naming this lens a * lens, they didn't - and the price reflects that. It's a rebadged Tamron 24-70, at a price almost the same as the Tamron, and the Tamron is optically almost as good as the new Canon 24-70 F2.8 MkII - and lots of Canon/Nikon users are buying the Tamron over their own OEM version.

It's the new Tamron 24-70 F2.8. The SDM is just a label, the Tamron lens has very quick focusing and their quiet focusing motors have had a good history of reliability. Yes, unfortunately we only get 1 year warranty, but I'll take the lack of a markup on the lens for that price.

$1300 is a great price, I am actually surprised it isn't closer to $1500. To bad the canadian dollar is so low.
