"new generation SDM"?

having SDM failed on my DA*16-50, I need something more than saying a "new SDM" to convince me buy anything SDM, or improve your warranty.

seriously, my $200 dollar Osprey backpack have life time warranty with great quality, this $1300 lens have 1 year warranty (with failed record)? need to do better.
Same here. Waiting to see the new SDM performance.

Use the Google. This lens has been around since 2012. Lots of reviews and AF tests on YouTube. If there were problems with the USD had problems there would be reports. Seen any reports of problems withe the USD branded as SDM on the 18-270?

It's the new Tamron 24-70 F2.8. The SDM is just a label, the Tamron lens has very quick focusing and their quiet focusing motors have had a good history of reliability. Yes, unfortunately we only get 1 year warranty, but I'll take the lack of a markup on the lens for that price.
The actual Tamron comes with a 6 year warranty though, and their service has been good in my experience (NY state, 3 day turnaround time) to fix my 70-200.

Not complaining about the price, since it is just a rebadged Tamron, but just a 1 year warranty on that same lens, just a different mount? Hmmm. Knock on wood, I've really been impressed with my 16-85, but Pentax doesn't have a great track record with QA/QC.

Tamron and Sigma have a tendency to have semi-permanent rebates. Good for consumers, confusing for everyone else.
Even so, its listed at 1300. Some of us don't do (or forget) rebates.. its still 1300 dollars out of your wallet for the camera shop to send you the lens.

According to the other thread, it's made by Tamron's factory, so QA/QC should be good on the lens - just service would suck heh.

Negativity abounds among Pentax users, as usual.
  1. Not just a re-badge - there are significant improvemeents to elements, coatings and weathersealing versus the Tamron version, within the basic design
  2. Warranties cost money. This lens has better components at the same list price as the Tamron - something has to give
  3. This lens is (reportedly) manufactured by Tamron in their factory, the same factory that makes some Nikon outsourced lenses. Historical Pentax supposed QA/QC issues are a red herring - they don't apply.

I don't understand it.. not only here.. but also at other photography forums.. people whine and moan about Pentax as if the name Pentax is Japanese for 'were positive that you're negative'

If this gear had Nikon or Canon written on it with a marked up price, there wouldn't be enough accolades and praise to grant it.

What is wrong with Pentax? Can't they even make their own lenses for FF? What kind of company is this?
Normally someone has to stick with a name once s/he has adopted it, but they might make an exception in your case. I think you should ask for a new name here, something like raincloud7913

Bad "cat's eye" bokeh, it might matter to some people. Depends how noticable it is on blowups.

"However, the inner area of the highlight disc is rather nervous - possibly a side effect of the aspherical elements. The highlight discs deteriorate a bit towards the usual "cat's eye" towards the borders. This effect can be reduced by stopping down. The highlight discs (in the center) remain circular even at f/5.6 so the design of the rounded aperture blades is obvious here."

I'm still waiting until the Pentax version is in the hands of reviewers before digging that deep...

Price is $1300, per the news release on the original post of this thread.

Pentax HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm f/2.8ED SDM WR Lens 21310 B&H
"New Release!
You Pay: $1,296.95"

You're welcome to go find someone else selling it for $1900 and pay that amount though.

And as far as whether Pentax can make their own lenses, they made their own DFA 150-450, and their own DFA*70-200. And as far as naming this lens a * lens, they didn't - and the price reflects that. It's a rebadged Tamron 24-70, at a price almost the same as the Tamron, and the Tamron is optically almost as good as the new Canon 24-70 F2.8 MkII - and lots of Canon/Nikon users are buying the Tamron over their own OEM version.

Tamron 24-70 is better or Sigma 24-70 ? (Sharpness + FF/SDM/HSM)

I'm not talking about the price. I'm complain about Pentax. Why can't they make their own?
Everyone is doing it. The highly praised olympus 75mm F1.8... is made by sigma. It seems that Pentax delivered us a competent product at 60% of the price of an equivalent from Canon/Nikon. I think I will take it.

To be fair, Pentax is trying to offer a full set of zooms for the release of the FF.
That's not a bad thing and partnering for what else they don't have immediately makes sense.
