Excuse me, "Vario Elmarit" naming convention for lenses is exclusive to Leica.

You didn't get my point.

Indeed, this is a Leica lens that will be announced together with the Leica SL 24x36 mirrorless camera on or before October 20th.

I thought we were discussing the Pentax Lens road map..not whatever Leica is doing.

Maybe Ricoh could make a Mario-Smelmarit to get around the trademarks

Together with 90-280/2.8-4 and 50/1.4 please....

The point IS that this new Leica SL FF AF system will draw some new customers away from existing offers, not to evoque those supposed to enter market later....

A lens like that would be the same diameter and roughly half the length of the 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6

Ideally it will be a constant 24~120mm F/4
Just to have some clues to sizes and weight i have some comparisons.

- Tamron have a 28-105 f/2,8 that weighs 880 gram and is 112 mm long and 87 mm diameter. Thats quite large for a large aperture normal zoom. Extending the focal length to 24-135 and increasing the lens quality substantially (needed) will increase weight and size a lot. It would be a beast.
- Tamron also have a 24-135 f/3,5-5,6 that weighs in at lightweight 530 gram, and are 80,6 mm long and 78,5 mm diameter. The focal length is right, but the aperture is far from constant f/2,8. Increasing to f/2,8 would increase weight and size very much.
- Sigma have a 24-135 f/2,8-4,5. The focal length are right and the aperture is closer to the wished 24-135 f/2,8. But still the size and weight need to increase a lot to make it constant f/2,8. The Sigma f/2,8-4,5 weighs in at the same as the Tamron 530 gram, but is longer and wider with 90,9 mm length and 83,6mm diameter. I'm actually quite impressed with what Sigma archived with this size and weight.

- When Nikon went from 24-120 f/3,5-5,6 to 24-120 f/4 the weight increased from 576 to 670 grams. The size increased from 93-76 to 103-84 mm (length-diameter).

If Pentax can make something like the Sigma in terms of basic specs, but with Pentax quality without increasing size and weight to much i would be impressed.

Pentax isn't out to impress anyone, really. They just put their products out to market, with little fanfare, and people buy them.

Besides, Sigma can't make a ergonomic, intuitively interfaced camera with a simple workflow to save themselves. Processing foveon raw files has a remarkable resemblance to voodoo.

In that case must be Super Mario Smelmarit. Like good old Super Takumar.

Oh my ... now you have to establish what software they use over in Japan! Sorry guys, don't want to offend or anything - I suppose we all have our quirks - but can't you see this is getting out of control when you are down to pixel peeping charts in different browsers to determine if a future lens might be 5 mm longer or not :-)
If you want to establish yourself as a member of a wierd sect which believes in doomsday and Pentax fullframe from time to time you'll have to do wierd things.

Hopefully the DFA wide zoom is fast and comes out soon. It could be used as a sharp (and hopefully fast) walk around zoom lens on APS-C until the FF is purchased.

I have a feeling it would look very familiar to Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 users...
